No Uncles, but the Ants came back from their winter vacation yesterday

Thankfully there were only a few scouts looking for food...last year their return was heralded by hundreds of them attacking a pizza I had left on the counter-top. But regardless of the number, there they were...which means it is time to set out the ant-baits again. Seems I can never get rid of them completely, but using the Terro ant-bait does seem to keep them manageable anyway. I had actually meant to set them out about a week ago when I saw one trundling across the bathroom floor, but I forgot...probably got distracted by myLot. One of the signs of spring approaching that I could really do without.

We don't get ants in the UK until the humid weather arrives and it's definitely not here at the moment. I don't mind the little black workers and even have trouble killing them but if they are the sort that bite I will annihilate them quite mercilessly. I actually remember making my sister sit on a red ants nest when we were both small and she did get bitten. I can't believe I was that horrible back then!

I wouldn't mind if I just got a few, but these will literally swarm by the hundreds if not kept in check.

@JolietJake I guess it's your climate. It's too cold and wet over here most of the time.

I have an ants invasion from about one week. I have placed baits, I got rid of most of them, but not all of them. I cannot understand from where they arrive to come inside.

@JolietJake This is the problem, they possible come inside from a very small gap in the kitchen window. I have found one walking on my hand this morning while I was brewing my coffee.

It only takes a hole the size of a nail (or smaller) for them to gain entrance

So far, I haven't seen any ants indoors here, just rodents, which seem to have gone... Do you ever get the ant swarms outside where a million tiny brown ants just suddenly appear on the sidewalk or patio? I used to get them in Hamilton.

Touch wood we rarely get worried by ants here. We do see a lot of them outside but rarely inside.

@JolietJake Most houses here are built on a sand pad. Some people have trouble with ants. Maybe we're just lucky.

Unfortunately when this house was built they used a bunch of sand as the filler in the foundation and it is perfect for the ants to nest in.

@JolietJake Yup, that's how our first home was built, on a mound of sand.

This is about the same time they mass-attacked last year...the pizza ordeal showed up in my facebook memories 2 days ago

Oh I hate aunts can't stand those things. We are getting invaded by stink bugs right now and i'm sure once spring/summer comes we'll be invaded by aunts also.

Jay put a boric acid solution all the way around the foundation, of our first home. After that, we never saw another ant crawling inside the house. The home was built on top of a sand hill, if you can imagine that!

@JolietJake I wonder why they did that, with many older homes! This one was built by my father, in 1958. Of course, ants were a big problem back then also, I'm guessing.
