The Oscars simply about protecting the brand now with politically correct winners?

The Oscars have become super political over the last few years and I expect that to go into overdrive tonight. It stopped being about the best films of the year along time ago and now simply about business, and protecting it. The sexual abuse thing has got so bad even seen the golden statues complaining about being touched inappropriately by an unnamed actor or two. I have absolutely no sympathy for Hollywood people over this. They bring it on themselves by preparing to do anything to be famous. Marilyn Monroe was famously quoted as saying Tinsel Town was ‘an overcrowded brothel'. You guys are in a very privileged position to stop it. The growing anti gun movement may share the political speeches this year but the films and actors likely to win are petty nailed on. ‘Three Billboards’ is all about a woman being wronged so can’t lose and so should just edge out The Shape of Water and so Frances McDormand also favourite on that basis for Best Actress. Somewhat oddly the Three Billboard director doesn’t get a nomination so another Oscar for Guillermo Del Toro with The Shape of Water? Maybe Martin McDonough is one of those quietly accused of wrong doing? The temptation would be to give it to Greta Gerwig on those politically correct grounds for Ladybird but bookies don’t like her at 10-1. She is an amazing talent and the next Woody Allen. I think that means she will win for Best Original Screenplay for Ladybird that way. Gary Oldman has already cleared a space on his shelf for his performance as Winston Churchill and like the great man, also can’t lose. Best Supporting Actress is less certain and a chance to add some younger glamour if Mcdormand wins the big one. A black actor will need to win one of the acting awards because of last year’s protests so Mary J Blythe has an outside chance for Mudbound at 12/1, the perfunctory black issues movie nominated because of. But age is on top again here with sexy six footer in 60-year–old Alison’ West Wing’ Janney 1/4 on now for I Tonya. Best Supporting Male actor is equally unsure and a late breaking news story about sexual abuse could yet sink one or two of them. Don’t discount that from angry older actress whose careers have tanked and in need of publicity to revive those careers. I don’t believe Sam Rockwell is that man and 1/3 on with the bookies for Three Billboards. Gay movie Call Me By Your Name should win Best Adapted Screenplay to box tick that LGBT group on the night and a handful of technical Oscars for Blade Runner 2049. The rest of The Oscars are the ones welldeserved.

Not only Oscars seek politically correct winners. I have also noticed for decades that the Nobel Prize for Literature and for Peace work the same way.

I never follow the Oscars. I have favorite legendary actors and actresses. But once they get unreasonably political and destructively hateful, I sever my 'relationship' with them completely.

I have said for years that the Grammys are no longer going for the “best music,” but rather “the biggest ratings.” Last year they only broadcast eleven of eighty four categories. In a similar manner, I think the Oscars are focusing more on how to get big ratings for the show than truly analyzing and critiquing a film based on its merit. As you said, it’s protecting the brand. I’m not watching. I will never watch again. I have a serious problem with someone who makes $25 million per movie complaining that he/she is “discriminated against,” when most of us are lucky to make $25 thousand per year.

I was really hoping there wouldn't be anything bad about the Oscars tonight. Your description of them pre- seen, doesn't give one hope for a good clean ceremony. I hope they are a good clean show tonight. But it is Oscars so anything goes.

Jordan Peele will win original screenplay for Get Out which is the most heralded black movie of the year and he was already won the WGA award which means he is a lock. Rockwell and Janney have won every award up to now,
