First Time Way From Home...Alone

There were times when I got bored with family life and felt that I had all good travel opportunities passed me by just because I was scared to travel alone. When an opportunity for a scholarship abroad (Singapore) knocked at my door again, I felt that it was time to make a go for it. I felt I needed that at least to relax and have a real good time for myself. It was a one month short course to attend and I really did undergo a rigid screening just to represent the country. It was my first time to be away from home. Would you believe that the same oldest brother I mentioned who accompanied me in applying for a job was the same brother who were with me to get my passport?! Really! Imagine, I already had 3 kids but my siblings never stopped worrying about me when it comes to things like that. It felt like I am a stupid little cat who would go astray once not supervised. That first trip away from home alone taught me a lot… …that I can also take care of myself though I was that far away from home; …I can’t take a longer vacation away from my kids and husband; …my family and friends miss me a lot! …I cannot sleep without the annoying sounds created by my kids before I fall asleep. The comfort that I felt during the stay was not really uncomfortable because I was not used to be alone…

When I was younger I had no problem traveling alone by car or even by plane and renting a car to do what I needed to do. Now I'm 75 and I don't feel as secure about it. I've lost my desire to travel. I like being home.

You had your time then. I wish I can travel more with my family as long as I can.

There was a time when I felt the same way as you and I went to Bangkok and stayed there for 6 months. I can travel alone by myself and even age away from family and friends. I can be brave when I want to. But now that I'm 40, I no longer want to travel alone and it's my choice. But maybe when that day comes when I feel I need time for myself again, I can do it again.

I only travel alone whenever I need to attend trainings and seminars but not for pleasure. I always do it with the family. I am not brave as you are when it comes to travelling alone.

i think you're lucky to have siblings like that, than siblings who assume you already know what to do and don't even ask.

I can relate to that. Being far away from our relatives, it taught us to be responsible for ourselves. My hubby once said, "when you want to go to some places I can´t go with you, you have to learn to be alone so you will see what you want to see without me." That is when I wanted to travel to another country and he didn´t want to go with me.

I am planning to do that. To travel alone gives you the perspective you need to know yourself better and be back a changed person in terms of maturity and experience.

Having your family who's always there for you is the thing that you missed the most, but go for it, go for your dream!!
