Do you say sir and ma'am when you speak to people? I was not raised nor do I raise my kids to say it to me or family members. I do however, say it when I'm working or just out. My kids will too.

I really do a lot of the time, especially when dealing with senior citizens. I feel it is important to show respect, to older people and just everyone in general. I teach my kids not to address adults by first name either, I think they should show respect too.

I do. I was raised in Germany, where they even have "Formal" ways of addressing elders. I think it is respectful.

I generally don't say ma'am or sir even when I am at work. It feels a little formal to me, but there could be a little more formality these days. It is a very polite way of addressing people.

I make it a point not to sound bossy while talking. So the best way would be the use of such salutory remarks. I also address Taxi drivers as sir's. So it all depends on your priorities. Good day to you, bye.
