Diary Wednesday 7th March 2018 A lot on today starting with mandatory attendance of a jobs fair promoting work in the hospitality industry, with jobs like bar staffing, waiters, hotel porters and receptionists, etc. This isn’t work I seek as the hours would often mean having to get taxis to get home with shifts ending after buses stop running. My welfare advisors demanded my attendance. Not turning up on time would stop my benefits. I turned up but most invited employers didn’t and the few attending jut advised the hundred or so welfare claimants there, including me, to look on their websites. At least in being registered as attending my own welfare benefits were safe. I called in the library for an hour, largely to stay warm and kill time before my next activity, helping with interviews for students hoping to study as paramedics at the University Of Central Lancashire, in Preston. The prospective students were interviewed by two tutors and my role was to be a pretend patient who had taken a bad fall, to see how the students talked to me and dealt with me. I then joined with the tutors to discuss how well each of the five students did. It was quite a challenge for me as well as the students. Diary Thursday 8th March 2018 My second visit to the welfare office in two days, as this was my now weekly welfare hearing, to assess how well my job searching has gone. My advisor apologized for the poor attendance at the jobs fair and ordered me to attend an agency registration meeting there on Tuesday for possible warehousing work before my next welfare hearing next Thursday. Again I used the library to bridge a gap between activities, this time before going to the community centre for a few hours using their computers for job search activity and meeting friends there. With a little shopping in the rain, my day was done. Arthur Chappell

We are lucky there are the libraries where to stay warm and kill the time having a look around. It must be annoying to have to report about the job searching every week.

@LadyDuck yes, it is silly and costly - it can also prevent me getting away as they make attendance mandatory even if you are on holiday out of town

@LadyDuck yes, it worries me that they could still mess up my easter break in Harrogate plans - at least the bank holidays will be clear as their offices close then, but hoping for a few days either side of the bank holidays too

@arthurchappell This is a silly system. They oblige you to come back from a holiday just for this.

What a waste of time. I visit a lot of hotels for speaking gigs and I seldom see staff above a certain age.

@asfarasiknow yes they tend to like younger attractive looking staff, who generally find it easier to get tips from flirtatious customers too

@asfarasiknow yes, more companies than ever hijack the tips and gratuities nowadays

@arthurchappell And probably don't nod off as night porters. Whether tips actually reach staff is a lottery.

They really put you through the mill for your welfare payments, don't they? Here, particularly with older people, of which you're not quite one yet, , doing volunteer work counts as 'points' towards receiving benefits. It is impossible for some older people to find work so they are required to do a certain number of hours work as a volunteer.

@JudyEv it isn't obligatory to volunteer here, but it is generally encouraged though sometimes my advisor seems to think it' is just in the way of actual paid work seeking

@JudyEv I have ten years to my retirement and that creates barriers already

@arthurchappell I can understand that it could be more trouble than it's worth. Some here only have a year or two to go before retirement and there is no way they are going to get a job.

I think I'd rather work in a warehouse than in hospitality. Less public to deal with.

Glad you could wait in the library in between stuff Arthur...too cold outside. That must be so very interesting with the students there. Silly having to go to that fair when no one was there the companies I mean. And now for the warehouse work..that would be bad too wouldn´t it late hours and all?
