I have been awarding bands and artists that get used a lot on the site the designation of the MyLot Music Hall of Fame. Today's entry: R.E.M. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's R.E.M. get used quite a bit in music countdowns. Myself, @FourWalls, @JolietJake, and @JohnRoberts have all done music discussions that contain the band, and rightly so. Since they emerged from the vibrant Athens, Georgia music scene in 1980, R E.M. did not make a bad album, and sold over 80 million records worldwide, making them one of the most successful alternative bands in history. After considering names such as Twisted Knives, Cans of Piss, and Negro Wives, they became R.E.M. after vocalist Michael Stipe suggested it. The group won three Grammy's during their 31 year career. R.E.M. were passionate advocates, raising funds for causes such as the environment, feminism, and human rights, as well as renovating historic buildings in Athens. Vocalist Michael Stipe was set to collaborate with Kurt Cobain before Cobain's suicide. Once, I read a Cobain interview in Rolling Stone Magazine in which the Nirvana vocalist sounded like he would rather have been in R.E.M. than Nirvana. That's how well liked R.E.M. was. All told, they released 15 albums, three live albums (they were a great live band. I saw them in Belgium, and their set was one of the best of the day. I've linked to a live performance of the song that opened with in Belgium, Pop Song 89, shot in Brazil in 2001. Enjoy,! (Talking weather info verified by Wikipedia)

I was never a huge REM fan. I like a few of their songs (Bang and Blame, Everybody Hurts, What's the Frequency) but overall I can do without them.

They (and Dire Straits) were probably my favorite bands of the '80s.

@teamfreak16 Guitarists with a unique style? That would include Knopfler, Richard Thompson, Jimi, Bruce Cockburn, Robbie Robertson, and others.

Dire Straits put out some great stuff in the 80's. I really need to find a way to use them in one of these.

I hope Nirvana weren't functioning when Cobain said that about them.

@teamfreak16 It seems a bit of a disloyal remark.

Shiny happy people who are screaming at the top of their lungs, 'It's the end of the world as we know it!'.

Well, (Wendell) Gee, I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of this band. They’re okay, but they’re no Hindu Love Gods.

I don't know. R.E.M. was pretty good for a Peter Buck side project.
