Our second oldest granddaughter has officially been accepted to one of the Veterinary graduate schools she applied to! She is still waiting to hear for the other three before she makes a final decision where she will go, but she was so excited to be accepted to one of them! We have been told that it is harder to get into vet school than it is medical school, so this is a major accomplishment for her. She finishes up her undergraduate degree in pre-veterinary medicine in June and then she'll be off to graduate school! Her grandfather on the other side of the family is a retired veterinarian in Northern California and has been a major help and inspiration to her. She used to help in his clinic when she was in high school. Perhaps someday she will fill his shoes in the veterinary clinic he still owns. Once she makes her final school choice, she can start to relax and move forward with her life. We're so happy for her!

I worked as a receptionist in a vet clinic back in the early 80s and found out that it takes a long time to become a veterinarian because of the many species they have to work with. The vet in that clinic worked on dogs, cats, equines and bovines so he really had extensive training. I listened when he told his assistant that the most affordable way to get a degree was to go to school in Mexico, I'm not sure I'd want to do that though, they aren't known for tolerating women.

@rebelann - Thanks for that comment. Yes, it takes a long time. It took her 5 years to get her B.S. degree because she had to do both a small animal and large animal internship. She also worked in a vet clinic to help pay her way to college. The Vet School she has been accepted to is in the Caribbean, which appeals to her, but it is a long way to travel back and forth from California very often. She has also applied to closer schools, so she is waiting to hear from them. The cost of each school and the financial aid offered will make a difference, too. We'll see how it works out!

Yeah, I heard it can take over 12 years to finally become a certified Veterinarian @DeborahDiane how long will she have to study before she can choose which animals she would be specializing in?

@rebelann - I'm not sure how long the entire process will take. I will know more after she makes a final school choice and gets started. I feel as if the whole world is starting to open up to her, although she has a long road ahead.

@DeborahDiane It's my pleasure. If I am in your area, she will be my personal vet for Shadow, Mousy, and Putot. My children would love her.

I can almost feel her joy. She would be blessed to have the experience of doing veterinary medicine before even going to a vet school. I am sure she will take over the vet clinic her grandfather used to own.

That is wonderful. I know it once took more years of University to be a vet than to be a doctor but I don't know if that is still the case. What great news!

That's awesome and so happy not another lawyer or business person. We should get back to the down to earth living, not what can make me the most money but what makes me happy and want to do better.

Congratulations, I am glad she was accepted. There are not many Veterinary schools here and students who want to enroll must go to the French or German parts of Switzerland.

@LadyDuck - I have heard it is a very complex type of medicine because different breeds of animals can be very different on the inside, be susceptible to different illnesses, etc. She has lots of hard work ahead!
