*Repression

Repression is a defense mechanism wherein we forcefully forget something in to the unconscious mind. I am doing this now. This morning, when I was preparing my medications, I chanced upon seeing some prescriptions of 2 of my doctors who managed me when I was confined 2 years ago, same month of March. I threw the prescription papers already, with the hope to forget that experience; but only to be refreshed because of my Facebook posts last March, 2016, about my confinement in the hospital. Well, some things are really meant to be remembered. Even my first confinement on January 22, 2010, I wanted to forcefully forget it, but I think recalling the recent and remote memories actually practice our brains doing so, so I will just put those memories 'in a box' for now, and open it when the situation calls for it. Do you repress some of your memories too?

I think there are things I do not remember but I do not think I repressed any memories.

that is good to know. you are trying to ignore the memories that might want to come back.

Yes, there are memories that I want to repress. I have thrown the photos taken after I was attacked in Miami. Looking at the wounds and bruises on my skin makes me sad and sick.

oh, the scars you have from that attack is permanently imprinted in your skin, and it is difficult to forget that. but i know you as a strong woman and determined at that, i hope those bad memories will be forever forgotten by you.

@ridingbet I cannot really forget, my heat (where I hit the floor when attacked) still hurts when it is going to rain. I never went to Miami again and I will never go again in that city.

Yeah, but it comes back from time to time. It happens even though I hate it.

suppression is another defense mechanism that is distinguished as something that always comes back in your mind even though how much you want to forget it. i think you are experiencing suppression. if in repression, we want to forget, in suppression, that thing we want to forget always wants to come back.

I try to repress those things that were sad or bad about my life and think only about the good.

@ridingbet I didn't have a good childhood, and I try hard not to think about or remember it, thinking only about what did go good as a child, which wasn't much.

if so, then i think you are using the defense mechanism of sublimation, because you think about the good benefits of those experiences that you have had. this is what we learned in psychiatric nursing when i was still a student.

if that is so, then there is another defense mechanism called suppression

@magallon yes, and there are fixation and sublimation as well. there are many defense mechanisms that a normal person can do, in order to forget an experience

@ridingbet suppression is when we intentionally forget unhappy memories..that is when we control our mind or feelings to forget those experiences.

I think these memories we tend to forget but our mind does not want too. lol You just need to be thankful that all those experiences are now over and done with. keep positive. move forward

it is already embedded in my mind and i do not have to forget it now. by reminding that month in 2016, i will make it an anniversary of the healthier ME.
