Interest in planting citrus fruits

Philippines

My last about what I learned about stem planing, @rakski shared her Lemon plant. That got me hooked somehow because I have lemon here that I often add to my tea. The green tea that I take every night was suggested by @toniganzon for my gout. I've taken some of the seeds out and germinate them. In the future I will try to grow some Calamansi as well because my sister in law grows these too. If it works I won't have to buy in the market that were often overpriced. I'm also thinking of planting a mango. I've missed our old huge mango but it was tearing our house apart with already cracked wall. I've watch youtube and seen people grown mangoes trees with fruits in containers, but some say that might take decades.

It would be lovely to be able to pick your own fruit from your own trees. I hope your mango tree when you get one doesn't take decades to bear fruit.

Hello @JudyEv I don't know about the lemon because it's the first time I'm trying it. But with the mango I'd be too old to harvest if it starts to fruit.

@JudyEv Lemons take three to 5 years to bear fruit if planted from seed. Cuttings grow fruits less than a year.

@Letranknight2015 Maybe it would bear fruit more quickly than that.

Yes, in India they are growing mangoes in pots, they are actually done by grafting methods and may take few years to fruit! they require a good support after the flowering stage as they come up with many fruits at a time and it becomes too difficult for the tree to bear the weight! All the best @Letranknight2015! Thanks!

@Letranknight2015 , In India there is a tree where the owner has grafted the tree with about fifty or more varieties of mangoes and people visit that tree out of curiosity! Thanks!

You need to learn how to prune trees so they will never get super tall. Also branches can be turned into trees. Aside from Calamondin, Try Lime or Dayap. they easily grow in the Phillippines. Pomeloes are great too. Geez I miss my tropical Garden, now I am stuck with winter veggies.

@Letranknight2015 About mangoes, Plant a cutting instead of seeds so you wont wait for half a decade. Cuttings can give you fruits in a year or even months while a seed will take away a lot of your Youth.

this video is also helpful. You can also do drafting. You will get a mango cutting and attach it to the root of a mango seedling. Youtube is filled of tutorials.

Hello @CaptAlbertWhisker that's what I hate over there besides the snow. I have also stored some calamondin as well. But right now I'm in the process of germination.

Wow. That's great as I plan to plant Cactus and Succulent first. Are you trying to make it a little? Like bonsai?

You guys should try planting dragon fruit. It is cactus that grows fruits. Some seed vendors sell them and they grew well in the Philippines.

Hello @JustBhem I have already tried sansaveria / snake plant and welcome plant before. But I've been more successful with the snake plant. I don't think i have any plans of turning it into a bonsai, not expert on that kind of field.

@Letranknight2015 And I don't think that kind of plant will do too. You can make bonsai out of a mango, citrus or lemon.

I have a lemon plant which is meant for pickles and not for the juice. It surprised us the other day as hidden were lemons which we had not seen.

Best way to do it is grow your own food even if it is just a little bit. A penny saved is a penny earned they say.

Mango trees takes a lot of time to mature. Planting them can be fun though as you watch them grow up.

Some trees really are gifts for the next generation! Ive tried to start a few fruit trees from seeds to no avail. I currently have two apple and two pears that occasionally bear fruit. Last year I added two pawpaw and two persimmon s . they likely won't bear for 5 to 7 years. I hope to add lemon starters this year and try an orange tree!

Hello @Daelii I don't really like the part were I have to wait five to ten years for it to grow. You mean you have two apple or pear trees? you're lucky that's for sure.

I am happy to inspire you planting lemons. SAme with your idea, since I am always using calamansi and lemon, I tried to plant them. Now, I have more than five plants of the two. I also planted peppers of different variety for my hubby since he likes spicy. The tomato did not work out well.

Hello @rakski I'm currently germinating them but not when they're going to grow some small stems or something. I guess from now it could possibly take a decade or more for them to grow.
