The right next of kin

This is one area one should be mindful of,I have been arguing about this with friends, how are we supposed to choose our next of kin, Do you have one how did you make your choice?

Traditionally, next of kin is firstly your spouse, then parents, children and siblings. Presumably this has to do with form filling on such things as passport applications?

but most men prefer to use their kids which I feel it isn't right when the wife is still in the picture
