So Much For Living In A Secure Building, Eh?

Holy crap on a cracker!!! After about three weeks of bronchitis that made me wonder how much longer I had to live, I actually felt like myself, today. To celebrate my recovery, I went to the mall for a cuppa coffee at Tim Horton's before "Roll Up The Rim To Win" ended, then to Second Cup for my "second cup" of coffee (literally). After a few hours sitting there with my laptop, I came home to my apartment, in one of Guelph's BEST and most SECURE buildings, or so I thought. In a previous post I mentioned the noisy children on the bus, and how I had my earbuds in, to drown them out. In my haste to get across the parking lot, I hadn't yet turned down the volume. That being said, when I got about 40 feet from the door, I could hear a guy yelling in the entry way. I knew he had to be yelling pretty dang loud, if I could hear him over my still-blasting music. I approached, and saw a guy in a Yankees cab yelling into the intercom, trying to threaten a tenant into buzzing him up. Before I go any further, I should say that my previous apartment was in a rotten part of town, and this kind of behavour wasn't new to me. More often than not, I'd have to physically defend myself against people who tried to shove past me, when I would legally obtain entry into the building with my key. Back to tonight. I could've ignored him and gone in, but what if he followed me, and I wound up alone in the elevator with him? I don't think so! Also, what if the tenant who wouldn't buzz him up had a good reason for it? My best friend has told me horror stories about unwanted people entering "secure" buildings behind tenants who just let them in. Standing in the little entry way, I took out my cellphone, and called my husband upstairs. I put him on speaker, and let him know that i was concerned about opening the door, because of a guy yelling into the buzz pannel. The guy was not overly happy to be called out like that, and tried to convince me that he was not going to do me any harm, that he was just yelling at his Mom. What an absurd statement! Just as Walker was about to come down and offer me some assistance, two women came in, carrying some empty moving boxes. "See? These two aren't scared," he taunted. One of them opened the door, and I decided to follow behind her. He wouldn't attack all three of us, eh? Walker hung up the phone, and we all headed or the elevator, while the guy continued to yell at his Mom through the intercom. Turns out he was just a harmless blowhard, but they aren't all harmless blowhards. One can not be too careful in this day and age. As I said before, I've had to fend off enough idiots in the old building, to know better. I really wish it was legal to carry pepper spray in this country. I think I'd have done his poor mother a favour!

where my MIL used to live, the rotten kids upstairs would brace the door open cause they were too lazy to get a key.whenever i went over there,i'd kick whatever it was out.defeats the whole purpose of a secure door.

Sounds like where my best friend lives. She gets her packages sent to me, because the mailman never leaves them in the lobby, here. Good for you for closing the door.

I wouldn't want any guy who would talk to his mother that way anywhere near me. You did the smart thing.

Thanks! The way I see it, if he can talk to his mother like that, he'll have no problem killing a stranger.

Pepper spray may be illegal, but hairspray isn't, and will have the same effect.

That is not a good way to treat your Mom. He should be ashamed of himself.

That's what i thought!!!!! If I were her, I'd have called the cops and had him arrested. I know men who have been arrested for less than that.
