Beach Clean-Ups Coming Soon

Next weekend, on March 24, many people in our area will be participating in either the March for Our Lives, or will be helping with a beach clean-up. Other beach cleanups will take place on or near April 22, on Earth Day. Many people do not realize that nearly anything that gets thrown on a street or sidewalk will go down the storm sewers to the nearest body of water and, often, will end up on our beaches and in the ocean. I took this photo after a heavy rainfall in Laguna Beach. It shows how quickly trash can end up on the beach. I hope that no matter where you live, you will dispose of your trash properly so people do not have to clean up your messes when they end up at the beach. Have you ever helped with a beach cleanup? Are you guilty of throwing bits of trash on the ground?

We have similar issues with street runoff into our creeks which run through the city. And then the creeks empty into lakes that eventually drain into our aquifer. Thankfully, there are groups in this city who are always doing creek cleanups! Next Saturday, my daughter and I will be taking a first aid/CPR/AED class through the American Red Cross. She needs to get certified for an upcoming job, and I just need to renew my certification.

@moffittjc - That is wonderful that you and your daughter are taking a CPR class together. When I was a Scout leader, I took CPR every year. Then, when I worked at a high school, I was required to take the class every other year. I haven't taken it in four years, since I retired, so eventually I should take a refresher, too.

@DeborahDiane It is required for my job, and I have to re-certify ever year. I was going to wait and take a class with many of my coworkers, but when I found out my daughter had to have it and was signed up for a class, I decided I would sign up and take the same class as her.

@moffittjc - That will be a fun way for you and your daughter to bond ... while trying to resuscitate "Annie" ... at least that's what they called our dummies.

We have no sea, but twice a year there is a "park cleanup". People here throw their trash in the bins. Tourists are not so kind not to pollute our parks and picnic areas. The cleaning will be after Easter (many tourists coming here) and in late September, after the summer vacations.

@DeborahDiane We are very upset that tourists do not respect. When people come here from other countries they all admire "how clean Switzerland is", well they should help keeping it clean.

@LadyDuck - I agree that tourists should respect everything when they visit other countries ... the cleanliness, the cathedrals, the mosques, and the culture. Too many tourists act like they are in Disneyland, not in the real homes, cities and places of worship of real people.

@LadyDuck - I remember when we visited Switzerland how clean it seemed to be. It is wonderful that you have a park cleaning, but it is such a shame that you have to clean up after tourists. People are just not respectful.

I haven't tried it. But I do think that local people should participate in cleaning up the beaches.

@DeborahDiane In some cases, you can even found a treasure out of cleaning the beaches. I hope it would not be a message in the bottle.

@Shavkat - It would be exciting to find a message in a bottle! It would be even more fun to find a real treasure!

Some of the coastlines look so ugly when they are littered with all sorts of rubbish. I've never been near a beach when there has been a clean-up scheduled but it's a great idea.

@JudyEv - It breaks my heart when I see rubbish on the beach. It should be pristine. I'm always happy when there are beach clean-ups. Usually there are groups of people ranging from children who are Scouts to senior citizens picking up the trash.

@DeborahDiane If we end up in a retirement village near a beach we'll be helping in clean-ups.

I'm a surfer so we usually take part in any of the local beach clean ups! I wish people would try to recycle more and stop polluting both our oceans and our land!

@Essjayd - I agree. We see a lot of youth groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and people like that at the beach cleanups. Hopefully, they will take care of the planet in the future.

@DeborahDiane I think people who use the beaches regularly are more likely to get involved as they see first hand the mess humans have created! We also try to involve local schools and youth groups in the hope we can change the way the next generation think about their planet!

I pick up trash when we go to a park. I always have a trash bag in my car.

@jstory07 - Judy, that is a terrific idea. I have picked up trash before and looked for a trash bin to use, but I never thought about taking my own trash bags along.

I've never lived near a beach, so no, never participated in that. I also throw my trash in the garbage. I hate seeing people just throw it on the ground.

@just4him - I agree that it is terrible for people to just throw their trash on the ground. It is almost certain to end up in a body of water somewhere ... a creek, lake, river or ocean.
