So 3 fools decide to start a nonprofit...

And it’s actually working out. Those 3 fools would be two friends and myself. It is just about a year since we found out our former boss was embezzling a large amount of the grant money funding the drop in center for people with mental illness. Unfortunately, the state ended up shutting the place down as a result of what she did. This left a large group of people with no place to go. We shrugged and said “Well, I guess we gotta start a place.” 9 months and a good amount of money from our own pockets later - we are a federally approved nonprofit! We have been very lucky at almost every turn. While we don’t have our own space yet, a church has welcomed us and allowed us to use their cafeteria to meet...rent free. It has been one wild ad stressful year. We never could have imagined doing this but sometimes life throws you to where you need to be.

That's great! It reminds me of a woman on the website Gather (I think it might be defunct now) who was very vocal about raising money for her child abuse charity. She ended up getting arrested for embezzling from it. It's shameful.

Unfortunately our former boss got off the hook. The state would’ve had to admit to not reviewing things, properly so they closed the place but refused to let the police persue an investigation. It’s okay because she did other things that the IRS will be hunting her down for.

Thank you. Yes, we’d be in so much trouble without the church. We secretly fill up their small food pantry before holidays as a thank you.

That's fantastic. It's so good to know that there are people willing to step in and fill the gap in situations like this. Good for you. I hope it will continue to go from strength to strength.

I can say that's awesome! No one would have the guts to pick up the pieces after a disaster struck. Congratulations on your business. You did a good job. Also, I used to have a boss who embezzled the business money and left some employees devastated and the business crumbling down.
