My Upcoming Surgery on my Right Knee is Postponed one Month

I expected to have my second knee replaced this coming June which means that the wounds that I and a specialist's office has been dressing on a regular basis needs to be healed at least a month before. The scheduler for my surgeon called this am to see if I'd be interested in getting the surgery done the end of May instead of June. We considered it until I remembered the wounds that aren't quite healed. They are coming around nicely, but still taking more time than I'd like. I'm hopeful they will be healed in a couple of weeks, but since it could take longer than that, we opted to push the surgery back into July instead. I'm not sure what came up for the original date, but this will give me more time to make sure that my new employee has a couple of months to get work done for our customers before things go on hold when I have my surgery. Maybe he'll be fine by then working by himself without me needing to make sure things are done correctly, but I won't know that until that date approaches. The main reason, I think, that the wounds need to be healed before the surgery is because sometimes my gait is not very smooth and I need to be able to walk normally to allow the new replacement to heal correctly. I'm doing a lot better these days and rarely limp any more when walking longer distances, but it's better to be sure and not have to postpone the surgery even longer than that month.

It has been along time since your surgery and I know you have taken care of your knee to help it heal. I hope that it improves a lot more between now and July so it won't have to be postponed again. Better to postpone it now though until everything is healed well.

@MarshaMusselman oh okay that definitely changes what I thought then. Do you have diabetes or son that causes your healing to be slower?

The knee I already had done is healed, but I have two open wounds on that leg below the inside of my ankle. That is what is healing slowly and needs complete healing before the other knee can be replaced. I accidentally gouged my other leg a tad with my fingernail a month ago when taking off support hose. It took about three to four weeks before that one healed even though it was fairly superficial. I'm hoping each week that the one I've been dealing with since November gets more layers on it to bring it to the point that the healing can be faster than it's been. Some weeks the depth gets filled in a bit more while other weeks the sides close in a bit more. Even though it is progressing, it is getting tiring waiting for it, but wait I must.

@shaggin Not diabetic, no. But, I do have slow circulation in my lower legs and staining of the skin from about the shins down. There are other people whose veins looks worse than my own, but somehow the staining of the skin impedes healing. There is some varicosity of the veins as well, although most of that is the deeper veins where they can't be seen. This tends to be common for those that work on their feet a lot. It only began doing this for me in the last year or so, prior to that sores like scratched mosquito bites did heal slow, but I didn't have open wounds prior to last year.

Very interesting, I had my knee done a week ago ( I’ve lost what day it is because the recovery is so boring...) March 21 was my surgery date,. I will have to read more of your posts to see ewhat is going on in your neck of the woods. I had my first one 8 years ago and it’s still perfect, now recovering can be a pain , but I know it only gets better...

Other than my one foot swelling each day the recovery wasn't so bad, and i got three months off from work which was nice. After the first month I realized that the pain pills didn't alleviate the discomfort I had so I weaned myself off them. I don't think I had pain after the surgery possibly because I was in so much pain beforehand.

@MarshaMusselman they let me use the heavy meds for two weeks and then put me on Tylenol. It still hurts when I exercise but I do it three times a day like it or not and this time I work hard every exercise...my first i babied myself and it took me almost 5 months to recover fully. It’s nice to know someone is doing what I am doing..good luck with both.

It seems that it all worked out for the best in each situation.

@MarshaMusselman I couldn't ever get the confirmation link to work. It's got to be my computer if other people haven't had problems.

@AmbiePam Well that's too bad. I gave my daughter the code and she signed up fine, but she has a newer computer than I do. If you ever get a newer computer you can try it out again. I'm getting closer to my first twenty-five gift card although I may wait until that amount doubles.

I think the original date in June would have worked out fine, but the surgeon can't do it then for whatever reason. So, probably later will be better after all. Did you ever try out that survey place?

Thanks. We're trying some different things to see how much improves in the next week.

I think it was a good idea to postpone, just to be sure that your wound will be healed. Be careful now, do not do works that can cause problems to your knee.

My knee gets aggravated mostly just from standing most of the day cashiering. It isn't too bothersome otherwise. It was worse when I was walking unevenly and now that I'm walking mostly the correct way the knee is also not as bad. Had the date of the surgery stayed the same, sometime in June, I'm sure the wound would be healed in time, but something came up for the surgeon. Even though having it done earlier would have been nice, it's better to get our business going for the summer first before I need to limit myself overseeing that. A month isn't too different anyway, so that's good too.

@MarshaMusselman A month is not different and it's better to be sure your knee has fully healed.

@MarshaMusselman Makes sense in making sure the wounds are healed.

That's mainly to make sure I can walk correctly to allow the surgical knee to heal properly.

I had the surgery last year on the other knee. Recovery was quicker than expected other than my foot being swollen more than I liked. I spent the good part of the first month propped up on high pillows, although I did go to physical therapy three times per week too. Pain was minimal and I'm hoping the pain will be similar this time too. I will be working two jobs before surgery, but I will still watch out for myself too as I don't want to have to postpone it any further out than that.
