Overplayed Classic Rock Songs I'm Not Sick of (Yet): Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (#3)

The color is back in the world, with the sun out and the snow melting. And that means the road is clear to Nashville for my whopping second concert this year. It's been a rough first two months, so I'll hopefully get things warmed up as the temperature warms. But before I take off, here's the next song that's been played to death on "classic rock" FM stations and yet it hasn't worn thin on me. #3: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - Crosby, Stills, and Nash And I may be in the minority on this one, because it gets played. A. LOT. And, like yesterday's song, it's one of those long "bathroom break" songs. Clocking in at seven and a half minutes, it certainly allowed for the DJ to hit the restroom, the break room, and a couple of other places. Most people know that this trio formed from three different folk-rock bands: the Byrds (Crosby), Buffalo Springfield (Stills), and the Hollies (Nash). A true "supergroup": eight years elapsed between their first and second albums (1977's CSN), and the time span didn't hurt a bit. (And, in contrast, their solo material didn't sell nearly as well as the group.) Most people also know that Stephen Stills wrote this collection of short songs for his then-girlfriend, Judy Collins, and their break-up. The song seems to go in reverse order, with the love at the end ("change my life, be my lady") and the break-up at the first half of the song (the iconic opening line, "it's getting to the point where I'm no fun anymore, I am sorry"). It's a classic in the career of CSN. It's a classic rock icon, even though it's the song you know they're going to play when they say they have a Crosby, Stills, and Nash song coming up. And I haven't tired of it yet. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes Written by Stephen Stills Recorded by Crosby, Stills, and Nash From Crosby, Stills, and Nash, 1969 Ruby-throated sparrow:

Rarely Young. It's hard to believe, but they only made three albums of original material as CSNY, and only one of them (Deja Vu) is even remembered.

A great song, and now you have me wondering why I never hear "Just a Song Before I Go" on the radio anymore.
