So dad is 83... our newspaper bill is paid late because the guy comes late. Usually we pay it around 15th, this month he has arrived on 24th. Dad thinks he paid it. The truth, he has not. I keep bills and show but ......last month's bill was given to dad, and as usual it has gone somewhere for scribbling ... And what ensued is fight with the Newspaper man. The bill is just a little over 2 dollars. Come on dad......................... you can't be screaming at the poor guy in this hot summer! The guy was patience incarnate...he had chosen not to come a week earlier because of festival. Sigh. Two dollars? If dad gets a stroke or BP spikes, I will be running around the hospitals, that is straight away petrol and driver charges equal to 30 dollars, and hospital bill another 10-12 dollars only for consultation, further tests and medication another 100 - 200 dollars. Get things in perspective dad...I feel like screaming. But I keep quiet. I always do. I am the sinner. They forget, and we suffer. They don't even listen in that heated moment if we show them the evidences...sigh. I wish god takes me away much before that stage.

There are some newspaper vendors here who have pre-paid, discounted schemes. Do you have any there? Also you can ask that guy for a bank account and set auto-debit for that account?

@vandana7 yes if the delivery person could agree, bank payment would be better.

it's the same here. you're supposed to just listen and take it. can you ask the newspaper man to give you the bill personally when he delivers it to your house?

This happens when dad is home when the guy comes..sigh. I have told this guy several times...but he says it is difficult. I do understand for 2 dollars collection he can't be wasting more petrol. Others get their pay around 10th so he prefers to wait till 15th.

It will be better if you take charges of paying. Otherwise help him to make a note on diary so that he too get convinced.

@vandana7 If it can pay online then the guy won't come at home so no arguments like this way.

I am paying the bills nowadays. But last month he - dad - was home. So he asked for the bill. No..he does not make note in the diary. I think paying online is the best way. Second best is pay three months in advance.

It is the kind of amount that I would not discuss. I had to call a plumber last week. He worked less than an hour to fix a little leak on a pipe in a cellar, and asked $100. My father was receiving a newspaper at home, and he was paying for a full year in advance for the porting. For a small amount like this, it would be a good solution to pay for 3, 6 or 12 months to avoid a little incident like this one.

Thanks for that advice top...I think I will do that and shift payment through bank. It is oh so embarrassing when parents do that, and you have no face but to stand meekly. Yeah..paying three months in advance helps. Out here people tend to take monies and run away. That is another problem. Bank payment seems wise too. I know I should not have disclosed the amount that it related to. It is something that I try to convince him about but he does not listen...I try to explain ..hey imagine the petrol running to hospitals if you get a stroke like that...and since I can't be managing driving, parking, and taking you in, I would need a driver, charges for that, and all that...still he is like a person stuck on bad vinyl record.

@topffer True. Hope you are doing well dear friend. 800 euros/day ...oh wow...............does it include treatment? Or only room per day? Room per day would be around 6500 INR that is 100 dollars. There are cheaper options as well. Yes, we buy medical insurances, but there are many exclusions, and in addition out patient expenses such as transportation charges, consultation charges are not covered. So we do have to plan for health cover. As of date, Dad is only covered for about 800 Euros. I am hoping to increase it to about 11500 in a year or so. He is strictly against medical cover so whatever I asked him to buy he did not. I am very well covered...about 8000 euros, which is decent coverage out here.

@vandana7 Your hospitals are cheap compared to ours. We do not pay for hospitals but we receive a copy of the bill to make us feel guilty. My stroke last year cost about 800 euros/day to the state the time I stayed in the hospital.

Could you take over paying it, so he won't give himself a stroke from yelling at the newspaper man?

I do normally pay. Last month I paid, and dad was at home, so I gave the bill to him since he'd asked for it. It is gone somewhere. Now this month too he was home, and well..what ensued was not very pleasant.

@Srbageldog Very. Sometimes I apologize to the person when I can, as I went out and did today. The guy was patient, and he said never mind.

@vandana7 So you have to keep track of the bills and allow him to rest. Help him do some exercise like Yoga and see if he gets back his memory.
