JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE NAHUM Day 1 Nahum 1 Nahum 1:1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. 2 God is jealous, and the LORD revenges; the LORD revenges, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserves wrath for his enemies. 3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. 4 He rebukes the sea, and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers: Bashan languishes, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languishes. 5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. 6 Who can stand before his indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him. 7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows them that trust in him. 8 But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies. 9 What do ye imagine against the LORD? He will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time. 10 For while they be tangled together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry. 11 There is one come out of thee, that imagines evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor. 12 Thus says the LORD; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more. 13 For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder. 14 And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile. 15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off. Everyone likes good news, especially in a day when good news is hard to find. Nahum was a prophet who gave his vision about 615 B.C. His prophecy was against Nineveh. In this first chapter Nahum shows the power and majesty of God towards his people, and God’s wrath to his enemies. This prophecy came about during the reign of Hezekiah before the Assyrian army attacked Judah. He was also a prophet to the ten tribes of Israel, though Judah is also mentioned. Moses asked the people whose side they were on, the Lord’s or Egypt’s from whom they had just come. Joshua also asked the people the same question. Nahum didn’t ask, he told about the power and majesty of God, the same power and majesty the children of Israel saw every day since God brought them out of Egypt. The same power God showed his people whenever they turned to him when they were in trouble from their enemies. Who is God? He is jealous. He takes vengeance. He is slow to anger. He is great in power. He will not acquit the wicked. Where is God? He is in the whirlwind. He is in the storm. What does God do? He rebukes the sea and makes it dry. He dries up rivers. Mountains quake before him. Hills melt and the earth burns at his presence. He promises to destroy the gods of Israel’s enemies. What does God promise? He is a stronghold in the day of trouble. He promises to cut down his enemies. He promises to break the yoke off his people. Nahum’s vision brought good news to his people. He brought them hope. As Christians, your hope is found in Jesus Christ, God’s Son, who promises to destroy the works of Satan in your life. He accomplished that by his death and resurrection and will complete Satan’s destruction when he returns, and defeats him in the final battle, and banishes him to Hell for eternity. Is your hope in Jesus? Do you look for the good news he offers? Let’s pray: Father, you have shown your mighty power throughout history, bringing about the salvation of your people, and keeping them from total destruction from their enemies. You provided hope and good news through your Son, Jesus. Help me focus on the good news you offer, knowing Jesus will return, and will destroy Satan and all his works. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
