In 1984 both the biggest and the best song of the year was “When Doves Cry” by Prince. It was the first single from his album Purple Rain. The song spent five weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single was certified platinum and is at number 52 on the Rolling Stone list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
