Peeling and de-veining shrimp is the pits

Well, really it is just the de-veining that is awful. I used to buy the EZ-peel shrimp that was already de-veined but then I read how horrifically gross Asian aquaculture is and I swore off all Asian farm-raised fish and shrimp. The only domestic shrimp I can find around here is totally intact so you have to peel and de-vein it yourself which is a total pain in the behind. It is really gross too. I mean, I have a pretty solid stomach, but by the time I'm finished de-veining a pound of shrimp I almost don't even want to eat it any longer. You have to de-vein shrimp because you are taking the poop chute out along the back. You DON'T want to eat that. (That's why lobsters come split as well when you get a whole one at a restaurant) Needless to say, I don't buy/prepare shrimp nearly as often as I used to these days. Prepping it just isn't quite the same as it used to be before I became "enlightened".

What would happen if you ate the poop chute?

The most polite way I can say this is that at the least you get to ride the thunderbucket all night, and at worse you'll be in hospital.

I am not so sure it would hurt you, not the amount a single serving would give you.

I've always eaten shrimps with their "vein", small shrimps of course. I can't clean them entirely all the time. It's gross but laziness sometimes wins. At least I peel them. I knew of someone who didn't even peel them.

Blech. I'm not a fan of seafood to begin with...I would never be able to stomach de-veining shrimp. (I wish I liked seafood more, because I know it's good for you...but just, blech.)

Oh man, that stinks. I do love Seapak's frozen shrimp. I haven't had shrimp in ages.

I won't eat anything that comes from Asia any longer. Nothing farm-raised even if it is from the US either. It is soooo gross. I wanted salmon like 2 weeks ago and all the store had was farm-raised or a version (I forget the name) that I don't like that was wild-caught. I passed on it.

@NJChicaa I used to walk through Chinatown in Vancouver and the smell was stomach turning. This was in the summer and most of their markets are outside markets. The fish/meat would be sitting in bins outside in the hot sun all day without any ice and it looked and smelled spoiled/ rotted. I couldnt walk through it without holding my breath.

I didn't know what that was before you mentioned it here. I always buy the de-veined shrimp. Though I haven't had it in a very long time.

@NJChicaa The shrimp I've seen I thought said Alaska on it, or somewhere in the US.

@just4him I buy ones from Louisiana I think now. Unfortunately, they aren't EZ-peel. I doubt shrimp live in Alaska though. Seems too cold for them.

I dont really make much seafood at home, I mostly cook the fish we catch, fresh water, I think Cod was the last sea fish I ate. I do more oysters than shrimp.
