Tornado Awareness Week

Our tornado siren goes off like clockwork at noon on Wednesday. So, you know when it goes off unexpectedly, something is wrong and you need to find shelter in a hurry. Here in this part of Northeast Wisconsin, we don't see a lot of tornadoes, but we do see them. This week is tornado awareness week, as I learned when the siren went off shortly before 2 pm. I was just about to take a nap, and decided to find out what was going on and if I needed to find shelter instead. Turning on the TV, I found a station talking about the siren, and across the screen said, DRILL. It was only a test. No worries. I turned off the TV and took my nap. Do you have drills for your weather situations, be it tornadoes, hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, or other weather disasters? I thought I would also share this picture of the cake I made today. Completely healthy, no sugar, my own recipe, made up on the fly, and very good. Thanks for reading.

No, I can't remember a time where they were sounded just as a drill. We use those a lot in Oklahoma, unfortunately. Spring and summer weather always brings them.

Yes, it does, and April is Tornado awareness month in Wisconsin, so we have a week for active awareness, that I found out about suddenly.

They test our sirens every year, but luckily we never needed to find shelter. We do not have tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes in this area.

@just4him Strong wind time by time, but not destructive.

I didn't realize Wisconsin had tornadoes. I always think of them down in the south and midwest.

We get them, not often, but at least one a year likes to show itself.

@JohnRoberts I don't know about that. When I lived in San Diego, I felt a shaking quite often. Granted they were just a shaking and nothing major. It's true there hasn't been a major shake-up in a while, but from what I'm hearing, it's coming.

The cake looks good. Can I have a piece? WE don't have many extreme weather conditions here. We do have test sirens on the radio about once a week just to test the system, but I've never in my lifetime ever had a real disaster alert.

That's good you haven't. We've had a couple tornadoes here in the last decade, so I've heard the sirens when it wasn't a test. I hope you like the cake. It turned out better than I expected.

We only had emergency drills at school. Here the only risk seems to be flood, and earthquake (though we haven't felt anything in 15 years). How long does the siren last? I bet it's very loud, and can be a nuisance if it's just for a test. Glad you're safe, that must have been scary.

@just4him - The cake looks delicious! It's very smart of your community to take tornadoes seriously. I have been through tornadoes, and it is good to be prepared and know what to do.

@just4him We (Western Australia) have the very occasional really bad storm. They do get hurricanes well north of us and occasionally along our southern coasts.

before, our town hall had a big siren that sounds every 12 noon and 6pm for the Angelus. my late father would whistle loud calling us back home (if we are playing outside). as of now, the siren is not functioning anymore. drills on earthquake preparedness are done in some areas, but i don't think our city has had that.

@just4him this very early morning at around 2:45, there was an earthquake felt. i woke up and i felt the chair where my electric fan stands is moving so i moved the chair closer to me. twice i felt that. this morning, there was a message from the local disaster preparedness unit that there was earthquake in a distant town and it as tectonic in nature.

Those things are terrifying, we didn't see many where we lived in Colorado but here in Texas we are in Tornado Alley so they tell me. The sirens went off the other day and scared the hell out of me, the neighbor said, its just a test, don't panic.
