Taj Mahal

I read news tha the Taj Mahal suffered damage in a recent storm causing part of the buildings to the entrance to the Taj compound to fall and smash onto the ground. It was apparently caused by high winds. It is surprising to hear that it is damaged especially after standing there since the 1600's. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. It was built by Shah Jahan to be a resting place for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. He himself is buried beside her. There are now restrictions on numbers visiting this site due to the numbers of tourists who visit to view this wonderful monument. Originally the building was covered in precious stones Diamonds, rubies, sapphires etc but over the years these have been stolen. The white marble changes colour tone depending on where the sun is at the time. It certainly is a wonderful building. If you ever get the chance to visit it I would definitely encourage you to do so. I visited India around 8 years ago

Our friends have just come back from visiting India and included the Taj Mahal on their trip. I have an idea they said there was restoration work being done.

There is always some restoration work going on. It is a massive compound with loads of adjoining buildings. The four big minerets are built in such a way if there were an earthquake they would fall outwards rather than inwards and damage the mausoleum,

@garymarsh6 Best visited after midnight on a moonlit night as I did 35 years ago. It’s really eerie. The marble dome seemed to have a pulse in the moonlight and the place was totally deserted. Even the monkeys were asleep and my imagination ran wild. It was a treat walking barefoot on the cold marble.

@garymarsh6 Oh yes, oh yes! It was back in 79/80 that I was doing my thing in India so there weren’t the same crowds or security issues and it was pre-economic boom.

I have read that two minarets have been damaged during a serious storm. The authorities reassured that work has begun to restore the damaged structures.

It was beautiful but imagine when it was first built and covered with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. This have all been stolen over the centuries! It is still a stunning sight!

One of the places I would like to see one day. I saw a documentary on it. These buildings cost so much to maintain so it may have had as much care as it needs

@august18 About three years ago I did a grand tour of Tunisia and loved it and the people were so lovely and friendly. I am so sad though what happened at the hotel on the beach it affected so many people there when tourists stopped going!

I heard a stone pillar collapsed in a thunderstorm and earlier one of the minarets was destroyed. Obviously, they need attention and restoration to stand the test of time - siva
