When you keep on swiping you don't realize how much you are spending

Having a credit card is great. Paying is very quick, assuming there are no connection issues or technical glitches with the machine. There is no need to count out bills and coins. And there is nothing to really put away aside from the card. Just swipe and go. Quick, easy, and convenient. Yes, you may be required to sign the check but it gives you the chance to practice your autograph. Though signing on the machine is usually an unidentifiable scribble. All these are great advantages to having a credit card but there is a huge disadvantage. You swipe and swipe not realizing how much you are actually spending. And then you get your bill at the end of the month and your jaw drops open when you see in bold the balance due. Lately my monthly spending has been between $700 and $1000. Sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. And that's not a great thing when I am not currently working and don't have much income coming in.

I'm past the stage of shopping for the fun of it so now we only buy what we need. We used to live from payday to payday.

It's not easy living paycheck to paycheck.

@lovebuglena That's true. One unexpected bill and it can get very difficult.

It is easy to swipe a credit card and yet it isn't easy to pay off a debt. When I go to a cash machine with my debit card I estimate how much money I need for a supermarket spend. It is much better to spend cash so I feel how much I am spending. It annoys me all UK debit cards give fee for spending in other currencies. Even if using a travel friendly credit card building up debt is not enjoyable.

You have better credit cards in the USA than we have in England.

When you pay for everything with cash it is easier to control the spending for sure. I have a Capital One credit card and there are no foreign transaction fees. It will come in handy when I finally travel outside the US.

I keep a mental tally of my swiping but I agree if one is not careful it is easy to get quite the shock at the end of the month. I use a reward card to pay mostly everything including other bills but I never let the balance ride so no interest. So far I have never done more than I can pay but I can imagine it is possible.

Even when the purchases are not for high amounts it still adds up when you have a lot of them. My credit card offers 1.5% cash back. So I like that.

It's easy to get carried away spending with a card unless you are constantly checking the balance. I hate logging into my account online as I once got hacked and was a victim of fraud so I tend to phone up and check my balance and pay my bill that way too. If I don't I even forget that I've spent certain things on my card as you can do a lot of things in one month.

I use my credit card app to check my balance from time to time. Had no issues from using it. When I started out my credit card limit was $300. It's now $5800. Way more money I am able to spend... If not careful I can charge a lot more than I do charge already. And that wouldn't be a good thing.
