Can a woman be "Best Man" at a wedding?

Canada

So far I have never heard of it happening but would it be appropriate for a woman to be Best Man at her friends wedding? For instance, if a man and woman have been best friends throughout their life since childhood, and they have supported each other and encouraged each other in their separate endeavors...etc, would it be right for the man to ask his female best friend to be Best Man at his wedding? I don't see a problem with it personally, but I'd love to read your views.

Last year, I made a wedding dress and the bride chose her male best friend to be her "man of honor" ... rather than having the traditional Matron of honor... I thought it was really sweet to have that kind of friendship ..

That is breaking stereotype! Good for her! And him if he accepted.

I know it is not allowed here, a "best man" MUST be a man or the wedding is not valid.

@paigea We do not have exactly the same as a "Best Man" here, let's say we only need a "witness" to sign the registry to certify that she/he assisted to the wedding. This is necessary for a wedding to be valid.

Although it sounds to be weird, but as long as the new couple doesn't have problem with it, then it will be fine.

If a man has a best friend who happens to be a woman I would think he could have her as his 'best man'.

I think that idea is okay and acceptable. It all depends to the couple so no matter what people would say, it doesn't matter.

I have never heard about a woman being asked to be the best man on a wedding. This sounds odd for me.

Well, it is not traditional but it can be. I do not find anything wrong with that, my friend.
