Communication

What is your preferred method of communication? Inspired by a discussion some time ago with @bluesa I find that I far prefer face to face conversations, followed by texts and emails, and then phone calls. I agree that phone calls have their place - when your friend(s) are too far away to see face to face. When you can't get together. When you need a lot of information, quickly. However sometimes phones feel like a major intrusion. People expect you to be instantly available. My own texting/emailing/messaging etiquette stands at I will get back, when I can. Photo: Pixabay

I need to use a phone or text to set up face to face dates. I hate going through email. Ugh!

I am not a great one for long phone calls, the quicker the better. Like you the best way is to talk in person.

Hi Faye. I prefer my phone when I go out and do business stuff. But at home, I prefer to use my laptop since it has the same apps as the ones in my phone. I agree with you that people seem to be in a hurry and impatient. Issues arise because people failed to respond and make conclusions even if you have a valid reason. And you have to give a logical explanation.

Oh good point, when one is out and dealing with business - phones are invaluable :-) True too - it seems like people are getting worse about being impatient

I hate phone calls and will avoid them if at all possible. I could text all day as long as it's not urgent. That way I can respond when I hate time instead of worrying about ignoring my kids to respond to a text. Some people are not patient about waiting for a text reply and that really irritated me. It's usually older people who are used to phone calls that expect immediate responses to texts it seems. I love to see people in person but I am very shy so texting is much easier for me.

Usually, I don't like the phone. There's only a few people I like talking to. I agree about text though certain people seem to demand an instant reply with texting and that gets to me. I wouldn't have guessed you for shy :-)

I think that for most people, face to face is far healthier in many ways. But with my hearing loss, texting is actually better for me than a phone call because I don't have to worry that I can't understand what's being said.

I agree. Healthier is a good way to put it. I worry what will become of face to face communication skills in future. Oh I can understand how text would be so much easier with hearing loss...

Whatever works best at the time to get my message across or catch up with the person. Sometimes you can't do face to face due to distance. So phone call is good there especially with family. E-mail is good if you convo is going to be on the longer side. Text for a quick concise message.

The debriefing is wise. Sometimes I find I have issues even with the warning.
