If you saw a car accident right down your block, would you call 911?

Most people do call 911 when they see a major accident on the road within view of their home, looking out the window. But it is funny to think that, well, most people do have cell phones right? So let them call 911 and spare me the cost of a call. But I called and glad I did. It turns out they did not call 911 and at least 2 people were injured and when the fire truck arrived, the fire fighters got out quickly and looked after the two people who were in fact laying on the sidewalk and two vehicles were damaged, on sideways with the front end smashed and the other ran up on the front lawn in front of the house across the street. The traffic was completely backed up as it was evening rush hour, still daylight at the time of the crash. It was nearly impossible for police, fire truck and ambulance to weave through all the traffic to get to the victims of the accident. I am happy that I made that call to 911. The clean up took over 2 hours from the time I called the emergency response to the time when the road was completely cleared and they towed away the damaged vehicles. I am only thankful that this kind of thing doesn't happen as often since they put up a red light down the street. The cause of the accident is unknown to me. I imagine it was due to a combination of speed and distraction that led to the collision.
If you have witnessed a car accident and attempt to help, you are not liable for any potential damages in the aftermath. Call us today at 800.773.6770.

I would definitely call for help without hesitation if I saw one. I mean my conscience will kill me if I don't help those in need and they end up dying or getting into more trouble. All I can blame is myself, for I am able to help and do some changes of what will be the outcome, but I did not do anything, that's really bad.

Yes I would call and as we are in the middle of nowhere I would even go see what I could do if anything until help gets here. But too many people feel they dont want to be involved anymore.

@lookatdesktop Yes it is dangerous sometimes to move them. It can take up to 15 minutes for the volunteer fire to get where I am at with no traffic. They are all trained in emergency first aide. Often someone just talking to an injured person can help them stay still. Most of what I see out here is single car or car and deer wrecks. Both often caused by high speed sadly.

I don't mind calling, in fact I make an effort to go to the phone and call them ASAP. I first looked out at the accident scene and I could tell it was serious, some people had actually been seriously injured. They all get out of the cars the moment after impact, even if that might cause more injury. They say not to move a person in a car accident as it could do more damage to move them. But they all walked out of their vehicles but two, a man and a woman, were laying on the sidewalk near one of the wrecked cars, up on the front lawn across the street, and when the fire truck arrived, several men and women fire fighters went to see to their injuries and assess their condition. Finally the police arrived and moments later, an ambulance came and took the two to a hospital. The traffic was backed up several blocks east and hardly moving for over an hour, and finally, after all that, the tow trucks came.

@wolfgirl569 , I hear ya. So, deer are being hit more these days by speeding drivers? Sad news. For the driver and the deer.

I will call the hotline if it happens. I think it is a personal protocol.

@Shavkat I feel exactly the same about it. I would feel guilty for not doing anything when I had the chance to make a good difference to actually maybe even save a few lives.

Good for you. That is the best thing to do, call 911 if you witness an accident. Seconds count and your call could in fact save lives.

We do not have the 911 number to call, but we call the police when there is a car accident. I always call, I never give for granted that others did before me.

I know you would call. I hate it when they ask me what color or make and model of car or truck I see, because I get so stressed at worrying that the ambulance will take too long if I go into too much detail with dispatch that I try to keep it simple and stratighforawrd with some details. The number of vehicles in the accident, the number of possible injuries and the time of the accident are what are the main thing. It doesn't take but a 10 mph collission in the rear of a car to cause spine and neck injuries that require hospital treatment.

@db20747 Actually one night I called to report gunshots being fired near the house just down the block and they wanted me to verify who I was so they would be sure I was not a prank caller, more or less, I am guessing at that.

@rheicel , This is referred to by some as karma. What goes around comes around, you reap what you sow and so forth. or the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

@lookatdesktop If something bad happens to me on the road I also want someone to help me. So help other people so they would do the same.

I had to argue with someone about calling 911 for an accident. I heard a bang that was just like nothing I heard before. Looked out my window and a car had slammed into the power pole on the corner (had a corner lot in city). No one was moving. I tried to call 911 on my phone and the signal/ service was being wonky. So I asked one of my husband s adult kids to call in the accident. They didn't feel morally obligated to help an accident victims. It still amazes me I had to argue over that. It shocks me people won't call in to help but they pull out phones to record it for a sad like on social media. I'm very glad you called and I bet they are too!

I keep a landline phone just for that reason, in case of emergency power failure during a blackout the landline phone will work without power. I had to have my landline phone wire tapped off from our internet line as it has an adapter plug to direct the telephone signal to a regular landline phone and the other goes to the wireless router for internet access.
