Emergency room, two days in a row

Eugene, Oregon
April 18, 2018 9:58am CST
After we got back from Texas on Tuesday, we were tired, but I felt fine really, even played ping pong Friday. But, by Friday night, I was very fatigued. Just a virus, right? Our thermometers were dead so, we bought a new one Saturday afternoon. Temp was under 100, so still, just a virus. I took some Tylenol By Sunday morning, I was shivering with fever, had zero appetite (even for coffee). When Anne checked my temperature, it was 103, so off to urgent care. There they took one look at me and said go the emergency room. That we did. Much blood was drawn, a flu test was given, and an IV started. I had no sore throat, stuffy nose, nausea, abdominal pain or other symptoms, the doc decided it was a virus, so sent me home to take more Tylenol and rest. All I had to do was sit in my recliner and I was immediately asleep, then I went to bed, slept fitfully until five AM. By Sunday afternoon, I was again at one hundred and three, so back to the hospital, where different doc ordered the same tests, no changes. Then he decided to have a CT scan done. The radiologist spotted pneumonia in my lower left lung, so I got a bag full of antibiotics the the IV and a prescription for more. I was really pretty out of it all day Tuesday, ate a small bowl of chicken soup and slept lot. This morning the coffee tasted good and my appetite is improving little. If we can keep Anne from catching this I will be very glad.

I am so sorry James, I hope the antibiotics will do their work and you get well soon. When I do not have appetite even for coffee, I know it's something serious.

Yes, when coffee and food don't sound good, I am in trouble.

I'm so sorry to hear you have pneumonia. It's not contagious. I've had it three times. Make sure you get plenty of rest, even when you feel better. I didn't listen to my doctor and had a relapse.

I think that the bacterial form can be spread like any other. I am feeling quite a lot better after the bag of IV antibiotic (levofloxacin) they pumped into me. I take a tablet form of it for seven days and it has been fast acting after only 3 & the IV.

@DianneN Thank you again! I took Anne to her doc again yesterday. She had a reaction to her antibiotic, so they gave her a shot in each hip and a new prescription.

Why don't airlines stipulate that anyone who is ill must get a doctors slip letting them know they are NOT contagious @JamesHxstatic

@rebelann Good idea since many viruses are passed around in that plane.

So glad to hear you are doing better and that it was nothing more serious than that. Blessings to you for your continued good health. What you described was what my husband went through in his last days. He was on antibiotics and we really thought he had pneumonia. But his temp kept spiking and since he had always been healthy he had not gone to see a doctor in a long time. Finally, it got to the point that his daughter and I took him to emergency expecting to get diagnosed as really bad pneumonia perhaps a hospital stay and home to recuperate. Instead, they found that he had sugar diabetes in a bad way not taken care of and he was in for treatment. One treatment and he passed away. That was such a shocker. Both he and I had not even had virus or flu in ages.

That is so sad! I get an annual checkup and never have anything wrong, need no prescriptions, and rarely get ill, but this one flattened me.

Sorry to hear that you caught pneumonia James, but glad you caught it and are on the mend. I was just telling a co-worker yesterday how fatigued I have been this week, and all I've been doing is sleeping every spare chance I have. But I think it has more to do with springtime allergies than being sick, as I have zero symptoms whatsoever other than being very tired. I'll keep an eye on it and see if anything changes going into next week. Oh, and funny thing...you mentioned having no appetite for coffee. That made me laugh, as I used that as a gauge to determine if I'm sick or not...if I'm not in the mood for coffee, then that's my alarm that something's not right with me! haha

@JamesHxstatic I am a lover of eating, so if I ever lose my appetite or tell someone I'm not hungry, they immediately question if I'm feeling okay! How ya feeling? Are you on the mend?

I had Tony here and for months he was sick with pneumonia and we did not know, I did not catch it, his was so bad it put him in ICU and with a vent just to breathe. You sound like you caught this in time. Get well soon.

Her not getting it is my main concern now. The antibotics they injected plus the two doses I have taken so far have helped. I was able to eat a sandwich for lunch and did two loads of wash.
