Yesterday I took a long planned visit to Bodiam Castle, in East Sussex. I let the train take most of the strain of travelling, but took along my trusty Brompton folding bike for the last few miles. When planning the bike leg I dismissed a few hills along the route, big mistake! For the return to the rail station, I used a longer route and saved a few metres of steep climbing. The castle, built in the late 14th Century during the Hundred Years War, is in good condition, with plenty of spiral stairs. More climbing! The first picture shows the causeway across the moat to the main gate. The patch of green in the moat is where the barbican (fortified gatehouse) used to stand. The middle picture is the view from the castle wall looking down on the barbican. Originally the causeway came in from the left, where you can still see the supporting stone work on the bank. Any attackers would be carrying shields on their left sides, so were exposed to arrows from the walls. The last picture, taken in the middle of the great hall where the Lord held his feasting, shows the triple doorway to the pantry and buttery. Above this doorway was a gallery where minstrels would play, music being an important part of the feasting. Did I ever, what with very late running trains on the way home, I was shattered and feeling asleep by nine that evening!

I would love to visit a castle that was built so long ago.

It looks a good place to visit. If I am in that castle, my imagination will work.

@Ronrybs I do think that you are lucky, my friend. We don't have any castles in the country. Most of them are Spanish historical structures.

That is only the first of many castles on my list. Have to keep my imagination under control!

@Shavkat Strictly speaking we got castles from the Norman invaders, most the castles around today in the British Isles are Anglo-Norman

@LadyDuck Very likely, another visit is on the cards. I always carry my handy book How to Read Castles. Good to have a bit of insight

It was excellent. The whole place is looked after by The National Trust. As you no doubt guessed, I barely scratched the surface of Bodiam

@Tampa_girl7 Didn't Hurst buy a Spanish and ship it over to California to be reassembled? Must look that one up

Oh my mistakes. How many are willing to climb higher and how many are really enjoying the upward? It seems as though there are some refusing to allow the doorways to open or close.

I loved visiting the castles in the various countries we visited. All had a fascinating history.
