And why not? It's the cover portion of this morning's Play it Again, Sam, #45b: Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of Bob Dylan's "This Wheel's on Fire." Sure, they did a few straightforward covers, but when they really wanted to, Siouxsie and the Banshees did a COVER! In fact, they did an entire album of them, 1987's Through the Looking Glass, which was highlighted by their remake of Dylan's "This Wheel's on Fire." The version was released as a single, which reached #14 in the UK, and #13 in Ireland. Oddly, the Banshees reportedly were unaware that Bob Dylan had written the song and recorded it because they enjoyed a cover version by Julie Driscoll. This is what the Banshees opened with the second time I saw them. They rocked it so powerfully that I automatically knew that it was going to be one of those shows that you were glad to be a part of. Additionally, "This Wheel's on Fire" has been covered by The Byrd's, Phil Lesh, Golden Earring, Elvis Costello, The Hollies, Leslie West, and Damned drummer Rat Scabies. Impressively, the band Flake kept their version on the Australian charts for 22 weeks. Neither Dylan, nor The Band, whose bassist, Rick Danko, co- wrote the song, had a hit with it, but a lot of musicians were obviously listening. (Could the Banshees do a cover or what? info verified by Wikipedia)

Best known here for the Judy Driscoll version, used as the theme tune to the Absolutely Fabulous comedy series - great song and cover

It has to be over a hundred. I know I've seen over a hundred bands. I once started a list. I stopped at 50.
