I might have figured out the source of my anxiety

So, this anxiety problem of mine that has been ongoing for almost a month might have a simple cause after all. In January and February, I had certain dates that interrupted my normal diet. In that diet, I routinely ate specific foods that I had gotten used to, and stopped eating them in light of running around. It occurred to me as I was reading the list of foods to combat anxiety that one of them was baked beans. I thought it was odd, but it contains magnesium. Also on that list is leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and a few other things. Since I am allergic to two of those seeds, I wasn't eating those. I haven't been eating much in the way of spinach after the first week of March, because it reacted poorly with my gut (I'm not used to eating it), and broccoli and kale haven't been the first thing on my mind. Because of the anxiety, I have stayed away from nuts as well, until I know my allergens. That basically cut off all my sources of magnesium in my diet, without me knowing. What I learned about low magnesium is that it causes cramps (which I get a lot), increased heart rate (which I have had), anxiety/depression (which has been super strong all this time), asthma-like symptoms (my shortness of breath), and other things that I don't know whether apply or not. I have been taking a multi-vitamin every day, and thought that had magnesium in it, so never considered looking at it. It does not. And with no sources from my diet, I've been cut off. I woke up this morning feeling better than I have in a while, and last night I ate an artichoke heart, which is high in magnesium. Of course, it didn't last long until I started feeling bad again. After reading about the baked beans though, I ate most of a can of them... I'm a little stuffed. After giving it some thought, this whole time I've had this problem I can only remember a few times eating any of the food containing magnesium. Hard boiled eggs (which contain almost none), some spinach leafs, some broccoli, one artichoke heart, no baked beans, no brown rice, no wild rice, no seeds (allergic to them), no nuts (wary of them with my allergies uncertain), no oatmeal (never thought of it), no dark chocolate, some bananas, and some avocados. So basically, I'm very, very low on magnesium. Now that I have this suspicion, I am going to raise my magnesium count by eating the things that I can eat, and see if that finally destroys this anxiety problem once and for all. Even if it doesn't get rid of it all, I need the magnesium in my system to stay healthy.

Thank you for sharing this information. So magnesium is very helpful for our health and I think I can relate to this. Please do update us on your results. Stay well.

Yes, I feel a little better (mostly from the knowledge, for now). I hope my experience helps you out as well. I found a website for how to spot magnesium deficiency and I had several of the symptoms on the list. It's below, for reference:
Your most important notice information for site visitors with a link can come here. Click Here     The average American diet, government studies show us, provides only 40%—less than half the magnesium that we all need in a day. So almost everybody is low!S

If you like spinach and black beans they have the highest concentration of magnesium. May be you also lack potassium and calcium. A simple blood test is enough to know.

I'll have to start integrating them into my diet. I'm getting enough of the others. I take vitamin supplements. I was surprised that magnesium wasn't included. I need to just include more fruits and veggies in my diet.

@OneOfMany The best is to try to get vitamins and minerals from food.

@LadyDuck Yes, because I don't think I properly absorb them into my body through the supplements.

You can also buy magnesium pills. Good luck, anxiety is awful.

@OneOfMany That's a good idea. Anxiety can have a "hamster in wheel" effect. If the anxiety is triggered by worry, then you get anxiety and worry because you have the anxiety--around and around...

I did get some pills, and I got some actual chewable supplements, which I think have veen helping a little. Recently I decided to use 'mind over matter' and just will go back to my former routine. I think I changed my diet all around, and it complicated things.

@Debscrochet Yes, I'm trying to destroy the worry. The wheel needs to go. Perhaps I need to embrace my old ways and move beyond my rut that I've been in.

Well I've heard it said "we are what we eat" so if you up your magnesium levels and it cures your anxiety you will know you were right. You could always get magnesium supplements although I don't know how effective vitamins taken this way are.

@OneOfMany Yes I read an article that said that supplements are not that helpful although I like to take omega 3 for my joints.

@sprite1950 I stocked up on the magnesium containing foods today. I will have to add them to my diet. I think the supplements pass through the digestive system too fast, without the required absorption.

I did grab some supplements. Hopefully they help out. I agree that minerals absorbed through food is more effective.

Do let us know please. I am curious now about what you find out. I consume lots of nuts, especially peanuts in general. I am anxious right now, but then there are a series of things which I must do soon in the coming week. They affect others so I am extra anxious. No nuts in this world is going to help me this time.

I figure there are different levels of anxiety. There's the chemically induced one that I'm suffering, and then the anticipation/stress one, that doesn't have a cure. However, being able to meet it in a healthy manner is everything! Most of my anxiety comes from not being able to breathe well, and I don't care about it if I can do that well. I like being able to breathe! lol This morning it seemed that my baked bean treatment worked well. I felt good all morning long. Eventually, I burned through all the magnesium I absorbed, so the problem returned. Right now, I am able to yawn and inhale it, so it seems to have been influenced by the supplements I picked up a few hours ago.

@YrNemo I'm okay with it if it is the placebo effect, as long as it breaks my anxiety. :D

@OneOfMany Hope it is not due to some placebo effect. Do let us know please if this continues to help.

I also take magnesium. It helps my heart. But it doesn't get rid of my anxiety.

Well, I don't think it's a cure all for all types of anxiety. In this case, I have no emotional reason for anxiety but have it, and I don't like it. Are you also experiencing shortness of breath? Because that's the main part of mine I don't like. Also, cramping, heart quickening, shakes, and a few other symptoms that aren't just anxiety.

@dya80dya I don't know. There might be another component aside from magnesium that you're lacking.

@OneOfMany Yes. I experience shortness of breath. And all the symptoms you said. Do you think they are something more than anxiety? I also have anxiety with no reason. I can't understand why.

I eat many foods high in magnesium and also take a very good magnesium supplement I highly recommend made by Medix Select called Arterin. The magnesium it contains is in a very absorbable form. I've been using it for a long time. I buy it direct from the manufacturer. We also have a form of spray magnesium that is absorbed through the skin.that works well for cramps. My husband loves it. I have a review of it online on ReviewThisReviews. The title is "My Husband Loves Using Magnesium Oil for Neck Pain."

I got some supplements from my local pharmacy until I can eat more foods that contain it. I had a fair amount in me this morning, and it cleared up my breathing troubles, but by afternoon, it had been exhausted, and the troubles came back. I was away on a day trip, so I didn't get the supplements until later. I'll have to look into your recommendations. I like the spray idea. I get cramps often, and maybe this is the reason why. My diet certainly gets out of whack easily. I was thinking back to the years where I suffered breathing difficulties and anxiety all the time, and I thought of my diet back then... I can't say it was very high on magnesium at that time either. Unknowingly, I might have been depleted for a while.

Thanks for the info. I never considered vitamin deficiency could cause anxiety. always thought it a psychological problem cause by stress or tension.

I certainly didn't consider it until I searched for foods that could help calm it. I'm going to have to keep up supplements and foods until I eliminate the problem entirely.

As far as I know a blood test can show the magnesium level. Maybe it is worth a try for you.

@anikoonline It seems to have a slight improvement. I didn't think the body would simply bounce back just like that. Plus, I didn't eat my supplement with a meal, so I think most of it went to waste. lol I've loaded up on magnesium rich foods.

Me too, I spent the better part of the morning yawning and having the air fill my chest. I wasn't able to do that easily for the last 3 weeks. Though I'm hardly in the clear yet. My system is still out of balance.
