Our mangoes

It is 5:5pm now. I am salivating with these bunches of mangoes that my kid brother and his employees climbed from the tree and offered to us. I think these mangoes are ripe from inside. I wish they can be eaten with vinegar and rock salt Here in my place, this type of mango is termed Indian mango. We also have the 'kamanggaan ' or the native sweet-when-ripe mango. I wonder why this is called Indian mango. Do you have any idea why they are called Indian mango?

I think it's because our mangoes originated from India but as time went by the varieties that grew here became better tasting ( no offense to my Indian friends)those that grew in Pangasinan, Zambales, and most especially in the island of Guimaras grew in size, not sure but I think they are the " kalabaw" or carabao variety later on became the famous "Philippine mangoes" because they were exported especially to the U.S.

@ridingbet the name " mangga" or mango was also derived from sanskrit. Guimaras mango holds the Guinness world record for sweetest mango in the world. What happened to your tree? That carabao mango is a lot of money compared to Indian mangoes where there are a lot, I just ask for them from neighbors here in our subdivision, we have our own tree but it is the small but very sweet " supsupin" variety. My grandfather on my father's side use to have a mango plantation up there North in Sta.Barbara, Pangasinan, it's a pity he sold it during the 70s and just squandered the money

yes, truly our national fruit is the mango and the native mango or the carabao is so sweet especially when ripened in the most natural way. when we still have the big carabao mango tree in front, our neighbors would gather many sacks of the mango and we keep them flat on the floor and cover with newspaper. when they ripe at the same time, we eat a piece while peeling from the top down to where the mango hangs from the tree.

@louievill really? wow, that is so 'sayang'! i agree that the mangoes from Guimaras are the sweetest mangoes in the world. our mango tree in front of our house was already very old. the trunk had a fissure that it had a resident called "bayawak". hahaha. the mango tree had a very big canopy that it provided shade in front of, and in our lawn. but a very tall freight truck passed by the road and a branch of the tree caught the cargo of the truck. our tree fell down, and our cemented fence was also damaged.

@mlgen1037 ayy. my mother (+) said before that when we eat sour fruits while we are having our period, the blood will be difficult to be washed in our underwear. the blood will be dark and it cannot be briefly removed.

since childhood, i already know these green almost round-shaped mangoes are called Indian mangoes. if not yet ripe, they are so sour, but when ripe, they are so sweet and the meat is soft.

Because this variety is native to the Indian subcontinent. They were later brought from India to Asia, many centuries later.

@ridingbet Maybe Indian Mangoes are indeed from India and they only tasted different from the actual mangoes from India because Philippines have a different soil type. Most mangoes from the US are bleh because the soil conditions there made them taste like perfume.

they look similar to the actual mangoes that came from India. "Indian Mangoes" Are not from India because real Indian Mangoes are red.

@ridingbet Maybe it is as Hawaiian as the Hawaiian Pizza which is invented in Canada. Maybe it is indeed a Mango from Hawaii. Philippine Mangoes are known for the beautiful yellow color. Most mangoes around the world are red or orange/

there is another variety of mangoes here in my place, or most probably in other areas of the country. we had a tree before, wherein the lower edge of the mango is like a pointed chin, it is long but thin, and has a soapy taste. we call the mango "Hawaiian mango", for reason i don't know.
