Is anyone on here taking coumadin ? I am due to have a heart valve replacement soon and I have to choose if I want a mechanical valve or artificial. If I choose the mechanical one I have to take coumadin the rest of my life. Artificial one I will just have to get it replaced every 10 years. Can you drink alcohol or soda when taking coumadin ? I've been reading lots of articles about coumadin and I'm not sure if I want to go that route. But hopefully I can get some advice from others and if not I will ask the doctor. Thank you in advanced!

When I had a blood clot in my leg I was offered Coumadin or Xaralto. After finding out about coumadin, I opted for Xaralto. If you have the option of an artificial one, I'd get that instead of worrying about a blood thinner. Lots of people are on coumadin, but what I learned about it, having to get a blood test every time they refilled, to make certain the dosage was right, was not something I wanted to go through. Xaralto wasn't much better, though they didn't do a blood test for every refill. I'm glad the clot is gone and I don't need it any longer.

@just4him They told me the bleeding isn't bad you just have to be careful with getting cuts & let the dentist know.

@Blondie2222 I'd rather have that than the bleeding issues I had with Xaralto, and Coumadin is just as bad.

It's better to ask medical experts... It's my first time hearing about this, Coumadin
