My tomatoes but they grew themselves

I’ve continually said I’m not much of a gardener but I have put up photos before today of my pumpkin crop. I’d like to be able to say I can grow tomatoes too but that would be a fib (a lie). They are my tomatoes but I had very little to do with the beautiful crop shown here. This is all from one plant which came up all by itself in amongst the pumpkins. I guess some plants just like to be left alone to get on with their life. These tomatoes have now been made into chutney. I haven’t tried it yet but I’m sure it will be tasty.

When I removed the tomato plants last Autumn, I left int he ground the tomatoes that have fallen from the plants. I noticed that new plants are growing in the garden right now.

@JudyEv They have come where they are supposed to grow, a few centimeters away from where they were last year.

You will have saved money by not having to buy seedlings. Are they growing where they are supposed to or have they come up amongst the marigolds or bluebells or something?

Nice crop with only 1 plant ! Your kangaroos prefer roses to tomatoes ?

@JudyEv It is interesting, I would not have thought that kangaroos were picky. I was seeing then like living mowers.

Yes, they do They never touch the tomatoes. Our first year here they attacked the butternuts and I had to cover the fruit to protect them but they haven't done that since.

@topffer They do eat a wide variety of things but not everything. They like pelargoniums but not geraniums although half the time I can't tell the difference. And mostly they avoid strongly scented plants.

That is so neat I would be thrilled to see those little tomatoes growing all by themselves in my garden. I kill most plants so maybe if I just throw the seeds out there and ignore them they will grow like yours did lol.

I've probably had nearly that much fruit earlier but I haven't been out there for a while. There are still a lot of green ones on the bush.

We sometimes have it with cold meat in sandwiches but it wouldn't be very different from a spaghetti base.

@rebelann I know the feeling. I'm a hopeless cook and don't even like cooking but I find recipe books fascinating. Mostly I just look at the pictures.

They are Roma tomatoes so aren't round but a sort of oval shape.

Wow! I love tomatoes. They said its good for our skin. We have a small garden in front of my room. When I am free, I water the plants but most of the time, I forgot to water it. Its too hot in our country now and their leaves easily withered when I don't water then even for a day.

@jaboUK Since being on here so much I've taken on a couple of American sayings too. And some I use just so I'll be understood better. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em - sort of thing.

My father couldn't eat them at all although he could eat tomato sauce. And warm custard would give him an immediate upset stomach but once it was cold he was fine. I can't understand the reason for that.

Don't take offense to this Judy, but those are some ugly looking tomatoes! But I'm sure they are going to taste delicious when you eat them, so who cares what they look like! haha

They are in the ground. We have cut an old tank into three to make raised garden beds so I don't have to bend over so much as my back sometimes plays up. I have pumpkin plants in the raised bed but then this tomato plant suddenly came up without me doing anything.

Biological? Is that a type or just what you call a plant that pops up by itself. Tomatoes should grow really well in Portugal.

we had some tomatoes that came up on their own too.. I guess we tossed any rotting ones onto the ground the year before.. and the seeds just grew the following year.. we had a few good plants too... so now we throw the bad tomatoes around the garden where we think we might like them to grow the nest year.. lol!

I wish tomatoes would also grow in our kitchen window. I sometimes throw a too ripe tomato there. I don't have green thumb though so maybe that's why it didn't grow by itself.

We had a rogue plant come up in the chook (chicken) yard and that had an incredible crop of fruit. I guess it was all the poultry manure it was growing in.
