I'm sitting here in a locally owned coffee shop early this morning, a good place for this morning's Play it Again, Sam, a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song. We are at #29a: "Jolene," by Dolly Parton. To call Dolly Parton's 1973 hit, "Jolene," a classic is a bit of an understatement. According to Parton, of all the songs that she's written, "Jolene" is the most covered. Oddly, although the song was originally nominated for two Grammy Awards, it did not win that award until 43 years later, when she teamed up with the a capella group, Pentatonix, for a version. Written about a pretty bank teller that had flirted with her husband, Carl Dean, "Jolene" was Parton's second #1 solo single on the Billboard Country chart, and made a dent in the mainstream, reaching #60 on the Hot 100. Internationally, the single charted in five other countries, including #1 in Canada, #7 in the UK, and #8 in Ireland. Between the United States and the United Kingdom, "Jolene" has sold over a million digital download copies since it was made available in that format.
