Well, I can't call it exactly an Indian problem. The pattern of democracy we have is BAD. We had Karnataka elections, which is a State in this country. The votes were divided 78 Congress, 36 JD (S), 104 BJP. 3 other parties, totally 222 seats. Now, the voting share, i.e., number of people who voted for Congress is more. Yet, it has fewer seats than BJP. In case of hung assembly such as this, I think people's views should be respected. There should be proportionate number of ministers from each party. And since the maximum number of members are from the BJP, it should be allowed to appoint Chief Minister, and put up proposals.

That's messed up, why would they do that? Why do people vote if the ministers are put as they please, not proportionate to the votes? Well, here the coalition with the most votes didn't win because they didn't get enough votes. Hopefully they make something with the second largest party, otherwise it's going to be umpteenth government that wasn't truly elected democratically since 2011. We're pissed as well.

Post election coalition is not exactly a desirable option. It should be each party proving its ability to rule, or settle for proportionate number of ministers. That will definitely force everybody to think instead of towing any party's line of thinking.

@vandana7 Of course, post election coalition means compromises. As the country is literally divided into north (top coalition) and south (top single party), I doubt a second ballot could be fair or give good results. We'd probably have to divide the country first.

it's pity that there are still people out there voting for congress and keeping the nation slave to communism and foreign interests... atleast karnataka should be educated enough to get rid of congress now.

The most annoying thing is, for every small thing they are disrupting the supreme court proceedings, fearing issues upfront. New pro tem speaker has been appointed. Why are they running again to supreme court? After all, the counting is not going to be secret ballot. There are so many cases pending in the court, do ordinary citizens not deserve some consideration? Is their issue more important than say an elderly couple not getting maintenance from their children? Insane.

@vandana7 The thing is parties such as the communists and congress are coming down to violence. I won't be surprised if they create new ASIFA and new gujrat 2002 type riot and blame BJP and hindus once again.

@skysnap And to think that their leader remembers to visit temples before every elections. Ironically, after elections, he does not go near temples.

I heard the TV discussion about it. In fact I am not interested in politics. Yes, as a single largest party BJP should get first invitation. However, I heard the Governor is playing politics. In some other states, Congress was largest party but did not get invite then how it is applicable the same here.

@vandana7 I am wondering all the MLAs are shifted to Kerala state (the report was like that, I am not sure they already done it). Very much weird politics.

Yes, not inviting the largest party to form government is wrong. That said, Congress had no pre-poll alliance. Even after poll, there were missing signatures, effectively rendering the alliance futile. Unlike them, BJP did have all the signatures, which made it possible to form the government in other states. Because horse trading or buying of politicians is possible in this situation, there should be proportionate representation, and the party philosophy should take backseat.

It would be nice if it worked that way, however, that's not the way.

It should work that way...sad but they are not doing anything about it. Somebody needs to bell the cat. Seek change.

I kept reading about rape and gang rape cases from India, and wonder if the rule there should be stricter somehow so that females, especially the young ones, would be protected more. Do you think this election would contribute positively toward that end?

@YrNemo Oh yes, there are ample girls who resort to that too. Unfortunately. Given such a scenario, the assets of the accuser should also be frozen till the accused is proven guilty.

@vandana7 I agree with you there. Has there ever been a case of 'framing' someone else for the raping case? Asked because IF the penalty means some gain for some females somewhere, there might be someone out there who might arrange a rape case, just to benefit themselves.

thats because democracy is just a label. Over here in the USA the popular vote doesn't mean anything. :(

@Daelii I really wish we could vote the way we vote on reality show and we should be allowed to vote on issues rather than for any party. The existing systems need serious rethink.

Yeah....it feels bad that we think we matter but the truth is, we don't. What are those voting rights? NOTHING.

@vandana7 its just a term to fool people into thinking they matter and their opinions matter. Its just a general tool for those with money and power to abuse in order to get complacent subjects.

I feel our people live in the mode of monarchy, tough we say we are democratic. Even as we did with kings, we still worship our politicians. They are praised sky high. For what reason ? Just because they are doing their work. A carpenter, a plumber, an electrician also does his work. They are not worshipped.
