Play it Again, Sam #25a - "Crazy"

Here we are, finally, at the halfway point of Play it Again, Sam, a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song, and today's entry is aimed specifically at hardcore music geeks! We are at #25a: "Crazy," by Pylon. I don't happen to live in one myself, but some cities are blessed with vibrant music scenes, a few of which, such as Manchester, Austin, or Seattle, are legendary. In the 1980's, Athens, Georgia, was one such city, a hotbed of alternative college guitar rock that produced bands such as R.E.M. and The B-52's. While they never achieved anywhere near the success of those two groups, Pylon was one of the great bands to emerge from Athens, forming in 1978 (an influential grandaddy of the scene, if you will.) The band lasted until 1983, reformed in 1989, broke up again in 1991, reformed again in 2004, and broke up again in 2009. During all that time, Pylon managed just three studio albums, six singles, and two EP's. But damn, was that some great music! "Crazy" was originally released in 1982 as a standalone single, in both 7" and 12" formats, but was later included on their 1983 album, Chomp. If you listened to alternative guitar rock in the 80's, you should be familiar with the Athens sound. "Crazy" is a textbook example of the music from that legendary scene.
