The Best Things in Life are Free

When was the last time that you had dinner with the whole family and had a conversation over a good meal? When was the last time you chatted with your friend over a cup of brewed coffee? When was the last time you heard birds chirping and making beautiful sounds as if singing in the morning? Holding a baby in your arms and just feeling the pure innocence that it’s exuding is very soothing and comforting. Also, watching your baby face to face as she is about to sleep, staring at you right in the face and making that very tiny smile, brings an indescribable feeling. Whenever I see fireflies I really am amazed at how there’s a creature like that that is glowing and carries light wherever it goes. Sometimes being alone in your room, holding a book, while raining outside, embracing the gloomy atmosphere that the weather is giving, is really very calming and relaxing. When I was younger, I really don’t care about these things. It’s only when I get a little older that I tend to be more sensitive with the world around me and I start to appreciate things more. I started to realize that I need to walk slower and notice the more important things around me to be truly happy. I just wish I realized it a lot sooner. I really am glad when I read posts here like the hummingbird’s eggs that hatched, the albino squirrel that’s really doing odd things in the backyard, the beauty of rustic furniture, those posts that showed appreciation of some sort. Those things will always bring a smile to your face, making you truly happy and stress-free. You may not even notice it because of the way we conduct our busy activities, but once you learn to appreciate those things in life, you will realize that indeed the best things in life are not those that money can buy. Cheers!

Hi Reign. I totally agree with you. We just have to look around us see the beauty of our surroundings. We just have to notice the people who are always there by our side. And those moments are free that you dont need money to have them. I like your post. Very inspirational. Thank you.

@TreinY And when we realize that the most important things are free, they are no longer there. Take advantage of the time they are there. Time is of the essence.

Sometimes we are busy thinking what things can make our loved ones happy when just the fact of being with them over a cup of coffee during breakfast is enough for them to feel they are being loved. Time is very precious and sharing it with others really is a wonderful thing.

Hi there Reign! I understand what you mean and what makes me feel great are mostly included in the examples that you gave especially spending quality time with the family with no dramas and worries whatsoever. Also, the one when you hold a baby. I miss that so much and I hope my husband and I will succeed in having another baby soon.

The thing here is, my baby was actually looking straight at me when I was writing this post. She does that every time. Before she sleeps she just looks at straight to my face, just staring, makes little smiles, and then she's asleep. Really indescribable feeling, so precious. I wish I could remember that memory for a long, long time. I hope also that you will be having to carry your baby soon. Make a post when that happens. I will be the first one to celebrate with you.

@TreinY You're absolutely right, my dear friend. I'm glad you have such a deep feeling. This is the wisdom of life, I think.

I think those eyes would best be developed when we age a little more. Generally, it comes with age, the appreciation of the beauty of non-material things that's just within our grasp. When you're younger you tend to be very busy because you're young, that's being young. But when you get older, you tend to get slower and that pace makes things be perceived more differently. And that's when you realized that beautiful things are all there all along, just almost everywhere, as if you just had those set of eyes to really find true beauty.

@caopaopao It comes with age. I'm starting really to age. But I think there is nothing wrong with aging because I really believe in aging gracefully. There is a proper way of aging and that is my goal. Anyway, aging is just a process, there's still that you inside that doesn't age a bit. I'm sorry if it's becoming that deep.

we, 6 siblings, are already orphaned. but we are close-knit. i am a nature-lover, and i appreciate anything i see, either on TV or here in this site. i dislike people who are cruel to domesticated animals. and yes, i have the freedom to choose too, who i want to be friends with, here and outside the net.

@TreinY i agree. even in this site, it is always good to be acquainted with other users who we think have the same perception as what we have. i try to gear away from persons who are show-off, and condescending.

It's nice to know people who really can appreciate a lot of things. We share the same sentiments about our environment. I dislike people who have no respect for other living creatures. They just don't know the role that they have, the play that they make to have the "balance", and how will they affect us if they have been treated unfairly. Well, I hope a lot of people can also demonstrate affection for other beings.

I totally agree that the best things in life are free. I have joy playing with my children at a park. I love it when they have swing for a disabled child. My little boy can go into a swing if it safe for him. My daughter can go on a slide, a roundabout and a climbing frame. I love to have warm sunshine or see colourful rainbow. I like to see my dog play with his toy. I like to walk along the coastline and the seaside views don't cost anything. A walk in the countryside delights me and it is free. I love to cycle along on my bike.

Today we had bus journey and the driver was running 25 minutes late. It made us late for a hospital appointment. This meeting was stressful and I had to talk a lot in it. We took a bus into town and bought some chips to eat near to the sea front. Afterwards we bought some drinks to have as it was a hot day. We did some shopping to make us all feel much better. Still the free sight of the sea was the best thing fot us.

@maximax8 That was really beautiful. How I wish I could be at your place, that after a stressful event like that, there is something beautiful out there ready to ease all your troubles and make it drift away in a very natural way. I live in the city all my life and all I can see are concrete roads, crowded roads, busy streets, and all busy people. It's only in the summer that I get to see a view of the sea as we go somewhere far in my place, maybe 6-hour drive from here. But then we still have to pay for our trip just to get that view that you are seeing day to day. What a good place you have there.

I am always with my immediate family. I had experienced the moment with them through bad or good times. The good part is that we are still intact as a family.

@TreinY I do think that some families are broken for such reasons. But then, they still a family and supported in a different setup.

I'm happy to hear that. Bad times are part of everything in life. I had my shares of bad situations with my family as well, but the important thing is, at end of the day, you understand that you are still a family and ready to help each other out no matter what. Sometimes, timing is just all you need. A good conversation with a family member magically fixes things. You don't even have to utter words sometimes and things will be alright.

Yeah, that's true. When was the last time you've been on a beach, feeling the sand dune and the splash of cool sea water with your bare feet? When you breathe, you really feel one with nature, all stress wears out as if you're very free. What a good feeling!

@Mavic123456 Yeah, cool! I've been thinking of going to the beach as it's summertime here but haven't gotten the opportunity to do so. I'm glad you've been to one. I really like walking on the beach on bare feet and just feeling every tickle the sand makes. It's as if the sea is massaging you as you walk by. I'm glad you had fun.

Our attitude towards material things change as we grow older. We learn to value those things we took for granted when we were young like health, relationships, time and peace of mind.

Indeed. I just wish I had the realization when I was a bit younger, but it's all good. What is important is that you are making the most of what you have in life right now.

I picture a surreal reality that I missed so much living in the country with our own creek and dam when my children were little. My older children have left home and have their own little families. It's me and my two not-so-baby anymore. Peace and quiet.

Peace and quiet. That's what country living offers. Serenity for me. Come retirement time I want our home to be in the country surrounded by farm animals, plants, and trees. I want to have a horse and a turtle. I will build a chicken coop of my own design and raise chicken for eggs. Just the simple things.

We tend to worry about future and visit past frequently. We are in rush and forget to live the moment. So many blessings are there to embrace us but we overlook them in the rush.

I remember one cartoon movie I've seen, the main character said, "Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the "Present.” Yes, we have to live the moment. We have to appreciate all the beauty that's in it right at this moment. Say I love you TODAY to the person you love.
