Why all these emails about my privacy?

Changes are coming to the internet. And they are coming fast. In the past month, I have been receiving a lot of notifications from multiple platforms advising me of changes to their privacy policies and guidelines and inviting me to opt in by May 25th. Of course, I am aware of the EU General Data Protection Regulation which comes into effect on this date, but I think that there are some people out there who may still not be aware of this. So here are some things you should know about this date and why it should matter to you: 1. In 2016, the EU approved a new data privacy law called the General Data Protection Regulation. With the central idea of privacy by default, this new regulation, which comes into effect on May 25th, 2018, sets stricter standards for how companies can handle your personal information online. 2. While this is an EU law with immediate control over companies operating in the EU, any other organization that holds or uses data on people inside the European Union or that supports businesses with customers inside the EU will be subject to the new rules, wherever it is based. Some of us may not live in the EU but this involves our privacy and personal information online and how this information can be legally collected online and so I think this is of interest to all of us. Here's an interesting article on what's happening on May 25th. http://money.cnn.com/2018/05/21/technology/gdpr-explained-europe-privacy/index.html

Privacy is almost impossible in a digital world, and I think most of these rules and laws are really just token things. There is no effective way to really police it, and enforcement would cost too much so there isn't going to be a strong arm TO enforce anything. I think we are responsible for ensuring our privacy to the extent we can. We can't put ourselves out there and then expect others to do the monitoring. We need to be more aware of where we fit in this technological world, and with the sites we use that we freely give access to our information.

I agree with you. I am not sure how the enforcement will work but we certainly have a role to play in terms of exercising due diligence and care with the information shared online.
