After a day and a half in Darwin the day I'd been waiting for finally arrived. The Ghan was about to leave Darwin and spend the next four days travelling down through the centre of Australia.
Excitement was everywhere as we all arrived on our shuttle bus at the station, wondering what was ahead of us. There were 38 carriages on the train that was 938 metres long. I'd anticipated a chaotic scene but the staff were extremely well organised. We'd been given our carriage and cabin number boarding pass on the bus and so all we had to do was climb aboard the correct carriage.
I thought I was lucky that I didn't have to walk far to my carriage, but that wasn't always the case. Sometimes I had quite a walk when returning to the train after our daily excursions. Each four carriages were followed by a lounge bar and a restaurant carriage, so I didn't have to walk too far for my meals.
It didn't take long for everyone to board and we were all ready to go. Our adventure was about to begin.
