About 18 percent of American women suffer from migraines and about 6 percent of American men. The common triggers for migraines are coffee and caffiene, lack of sleep, flashing or bright lights and even chocolate. Identifying the triggers is your first strong step in dealing with this debilitating condition. In some people some not so common things can cause migraines. Here are afew to be aware of: Overstimulation of the occipital cortex in the brain can trigger headaches. Visual patterns such as circles, checks and squiggles can be a trigger so it is best to choose simple designs in your home. The blue light emitted from laptops, smartphones and tablets can cause migraines. Wearing digital screen protection type glasses can help with this. There are hearing aids and ear plugs available to regulate ear pressure if you have a problem with extreme temperature changes or air pressure. Travel by airplane is a common cause. With some medications and even active sex being a possible cause it is important to pay attention to what triggers your migraines. Be sure to bring up even the slightest thing that might be causing your headaches. Without doing so these debilitating headaches can really put a cramp in your summer plans.

Funny that you bring this subject up. Both Monday and Tuesday of this week have been pretty nasty for me thanks to Vestibular Migraine headache. For me that means that bright light almost makes me want to urp and tons of vertigo- the room a boat that I can't walk straight on. My eyes don't work well when migraine arrives. I still needed to get hubby to work and twice I made it to pool exercises but shouldn't have been driving. Lots of sleep helped. I rarely wake rested so when a migraine comes on I really am tired. Makes me so weak. Not sure what triggers mine. I just hate how it messes with my vision and vertigo.

@celticeagle A doctor said that there is loose calcium in my ear canal, especially on the left side and that causes me to have vertigo all the time but especially when a migraine smacks me. This last episode was particularly nasty.

my boyfriend and his mom get migraines, but drink coffee. cause they say it doesn't play apart of them. I don't get them, only regular headaches, and I don't drink coffee, so I wouldn't know. though, I'm sure not everyone gets the same triggers too.

No, and so many things can cause them. Must be frustrating.
