I agree that it is ok to be different because if we were all the same life would be boring but I disagree with people being rude because of being different

I don’t mind it either but I just find it interesting that they are weirded out by the fact that some people are honest or vegan. They are amazed. They can’t believe it.

@Cristi_Ichim Well, that's not so surprising. People are conservative in their daily habits. It's a human trait to think that what you do is right. Everyone who does things differently endangers the known order so-to-speak. You should think about some standard answers you can use every time the topic comes up. Don't start discussions and never try to convince someone that your way is better. This is especially advisable for vegetarians/vegans. I don't eat meat. My husband comes from a meat-eating family in Sardinia (Italy). I've often been asked why I don't eat meat by his relatives. Even if the question is asked in a friendly way, there's a bit of aggression in it. At least this is what I feel. People feel challenged or provoked as if you attack and criticise them and they have to defend themselves. I always say, "I don't like the taste." And don't let myself be drawn into discussions. This works quite well. As to buying cheaper material: this is a bit more difficult. You will be seen as a freak whatever you say. You will have to live with this. You can say, "You do what you think is right and I do what I think is right." If someone challenges you and wants to have an argument about this, you can say, "Let's not discuss this. It will lead nowhere. I know that I can't convince you, and you can't convince me. It will only lead to arguments. So let's just leave it."
