Can't stand this heat...

I live in a four story house (three floors and a basement). Even when the AC is on for hours it hardly does anything to cool the third floor, so I keep it off at night. No point in wasting money and electricity. Last night, even with the fan on and the window open, it was unbearable. I could not sleep. Kept tossing and turning and lying awake for a long time before dosing off, only to wake up a few times because I was super thirsty and needed to pee. It was a bad night, so I couldn't wake up in the morning. Ended up getting out of bed sometime after 10 am. I thought about leaving the house after breakfast, though I wasn't sure where I'd go, but I changed my mind after I checked the weather on my phone and saw that it will be close to 90 degrees today. It is not even June and we are already having these horrible temps. At least, for me they are horrible. And the summer didn't even start yet. What gives? Though tomorrow it will be under 70. Not good that the temps jump up and down like that. I prefer it nice and cool as I am a winter baby and can't stand the heat... It exhausts me and I sweat a lot. But I can't just keep myself in the house the whole summer, especially when the AC works the whole damn time. It works until it reaches the set temperature in the house, then stops for a few minutes and turns on again. And it's loud. It drives me crazy. And so does being cooped up in the house for days and days... Oh, why can't it be nice and cool all year round?

Oh you poor thing. It’s hot here in PA too and I can’t stand it either!

And it is just the beginning... as summer isn't here yet. It takes me 25-30 minutes to get to a bus or train from my house. By the time I get to it I am already super tired.

@lovebuglena Oh my, I can imagine how hard that would be. Make sure you drink lots of water in this heat.

@momalisa65 Yes. That's a must though drinking water leads to more sweating.

I hate the heat too, and prefer it under 80. But sadly we cant do anything about the temps, except have windows open and acs on.. like you did. Sorry it didn't help.

What's the point of central air if it doesn't work on all floors the way it should?

@lovebuglena some are only big enough for the room they're in. like mine, it's the perfect size for my bedroom, but is too small for the livingroom that is twice as big (though that's where we use it)

It is only May so you poor thing with all that heat. I like sunny weather with a dry heat. A very hot sweaty day can be very challenging. I live in England and some Augusts can be really hot. I draw my lounge curtains when necessary and live to put on a cool fan. The hottest time I had was in Israel and Jordan in the summer heat. Darwin in Australia has a tropical heat with a wet season at the time I was there.

Darwin in Australia was the worst heat I have ever found. It was sticky and I could get so thirsty. There were thunder storms with lightening. Not even a shower would freshen me up for long.

I hate when it's very humid. And the heat is slightly more bearable when the sun is not out there. Having temps in the 80s or 90s is high for May and too early for me.

Can't you go down to the basement when it is unbearably hot and read there or watch TV? We did that together with our neighbours some years ago.

@lovebuglena Well, if you can read and use your computer there that would be something, wouldn't it? You can watch films on your computer. Send me a comment from down there!

@MALUSE I hope the wi-fi reception is good. The one downside to the basement is there is no window there and I am surrounded by four walls. But I guess I can overlook that.

There is no TV in the basement. But I can go there to read, or even be on the computer, for sure. My phone doesn't work there though.

I'm happy to have warm weather after such a cold and dreary winter. We don't have our window AC units in yet so it is just the ceiling fans for us during the day and the whole house fan at night. I'll take it!

Do the fans help a lot?

@lovebuglena The whole house fan does an incredible job at night when it cools off outside. It sucks the cool air inside and throughout the house. The ceiling fans are okay if you are sitting under them. This situation is fine for now because it is just starting to get hot. Eventually I will hit my breaking point and it will affect my asthma, especially after sitting in the heat all day at work too. That's why my husband will have to put the window AC units in soon. They do an amazing job of cooling off this house.

@NJChicaa That's great that the fans work! I wonder why central AC does pretty much nothing to coll the third floor in my house.

It was almost 90 yesterday and today. Tomorrow is supposed to be 90 or higher with possible thunderstorms. It has been fluctuating since Spring even began now it just wants to be Summer instead of Spring. I hate hot and humid weather. I would love it if it was 70-75 all year long, but that isn't going to happen here where I live. I have the air on and I hate it because it just seems too early in the year. I like having the windows open to get fresh air, but it gets so hot in the house and I can't stand it. It is hot at work too so I feel like I am always sweating. I hope you don't go too crazy between the loud air conditioner and being cooped up in the house.

I'd prefer it to be in the 50s or 60s. But low 70s is manageable. What part of the country do you live in?

@morgoodie I am the same way. When people are wearing a jacket and I am not they think I am nuts lol. I told my mom today that I can't take this heat and she tells me it is all in my head... Yeah, like feeling exhausted walking about half an hour to the train in the heat is all in my head. SMH.

@lovebuglena I'm in Michigan. I could handle 50s or 60s. I am always hot and people think I am crazy. But I think they are crazy when they say they are cold. There are people who wear their sweaters at work and am sweating gallons just looking at them. I don't even think they have the air on at work as there are pockets of hot air where the vents are in the ceiling. I would love to work somewhere it is cold.

If only we could make it go away... But you know when the sun is not out the high temps are a bit more bearable.

You are lucky. But I hate it when it is in the 80s one day and 60s the next.

I abhor winter. But that being said, being uncomfortably hot is no fun either. Our air usually does fine, although I still hate not being able to let the fresh air in. I can definitely see where being so high up even the AC might not be able to keep up. Cold shower time?

My shower is on the third floor. After taking a shower I want to go back in lol because I get out into a hot room, which makes me hot and I start sweating...
