Cheap as dirt

Ever hear this expression? Sure you have. But dirt isn't really that cheap. And it's taxable. I ordered a BigYellowBag of it today. Free delivery, and a $5 discount for delivery before May 31, but with tax it costs $168.37

Dirt is expensive. It seems ridiculous to me that dirt is so expensive, but it's the transport I guess.

We do not have this expression and in fact dirt is not cheap at all.

No, it's not, but the dirt in my yard is mostly clay and stones, and I want to grow stuff! (more than just weeds).

Why? It would take me several years of composting to get even half that much.
