Tell Me It Isn't So

I just read an article on msn about McDonalds and it's McCafe coffee. It caught my eye because I do drink their coffee and I enjoy it.
According to the article an employee told the author that they stay far, far, away from the coffee made in the McCafe machine. Why, supposedly because they really don't know how to properly clean the machine.
The article says that there is about 5 inches of sludge in the bottom of the machine that never gets clean out because they don't know how to properly clean them out.
I don't know if this is true and you certainly can't tell by the taste, it is delicious coffee.
Would you continue drinking the coffee after hearing this or would you figure it is just a worker who is unhappy for some reason?

I have heard that home Keurig brewers are great breeding places for mold. I tend to think McD gets their machines clean. Maybe not where that one employee works, though. I have heard they have awful times with their shake machines. Oh, and people say that a clean soda machine does not taste "right" that the mold that grows in the spigots is essential to the fountain flavor. Have I grossed you out enough yet?

It's pretty nasty when you think about it.

@Marilynda1225 Yeah it can get very nasty if left that way for too long. I am thinking that a restaurant cannot afford to let something like cleaning a coffee make go like that.

I'm sure that particular McD's workers either A) don't know how to clean it, or B) are too lazy to. Not all stores are like that. I know the one my son works at part time, their machines are clean, because he makes certain they are, at least on his shift.

Hi Susan. I do not drink coffee so I would not really bother. But if I am, I would not definitely drink coffee at all or at least from there.

@HazySue My apologies I forget to add the word "not". But yes, it would. Like I do not know what it is in my coffee.

I love their caramel frappe. I can't believe that the reporter would take the word of an employee. First, they may have a grudge against their employer which is probably the case. And Second, would this really get by the health department. Possibly but probably not. Most health department agents are quite strict about those types of things. Of course, how does McDonald's not know how to properly clean the machine. If they don't, then they need to contact the manufacturer to get the proper cleaning instructions. Seems to me if there is that much "sludge" in the machine, it wouldn't work properly.

@morgoodie That seems to happen a lot, the over exaggeration of a situation.

@HazySue Me too. Unless of course the health department closes a place down due to violations. I think they like to over exaggerate things a little bit too much.

Personally I would not know what to think. We have been at a McDonalds where it was good, and another one with No real flavor and not worth wanting to consider again. So for me it is No real Big deal either way, but from past Fast Food experience, a lot of times it depends on a Manager on how well something is cleaned.

I'm calling fake news. Why would some kid be telling a newspaper that he doesn't do his job properly? Most negative news about McDonalds turns out to be false. People have this need to bring down anything successful They would love for everyone to be a failure like them.

@HazySue That's my motto. I need proof. Not word of mouth.

Hopefully most of the McDonald's do a better job cleaning the machines.

I probably would continue to drink their coffee because I'm sure each McDonalds is different. And, yes they do have good coffee so maybe the sludge is what makes it taste so good?

Maybe. After all @GardenGerty said in her comment that people tend to say that the soda doesn't taste as good when the soda machine is thoroughly cleaned.

We don't go there, but how complicated could it be to clean the machine? Maybe the employee is wrong.

There will always be nasty restaurants, not all of them but there is always one. I used to watch a show called restaurant impossible , that show will open your eyes to how nasty places are. Same with Bar rescue.

I will say that at any place I’ve Ever worked at where we make coffee, we clean the machines and are trained how to do so. Perhaps it is simply that location as most McDonald’s are franchises so have different owners.
