I Am More of a Techie Than I Suspected

Last week I wrote about changing my cable service. Along with that change came two new boxes and new remotes. We now have HD service included in our plan. I have to admit when I opened the box with the new boxes my heart sank. I dreaded having to try to connect all the cords to the correct places. I talked to the grandsons about doing it for me but I got impatient on Tuesday and decided I was going to try to do it myself. I did read the directions. I had to connect the cable cord to the wall cable unit and the box. I had to connect the HDMI cord to the correct HDMI outlet and the box. I then plugged in the box. The remote had to be programmed so that it turned the TV off and on and raises the volume, I did this for the main one in the family room but the bedroom one gave me a bit of trouble. I was able to get it done yesterday. Now all that remains is to pack up the old equipment and mail it back to Comcast. I am not sure I am really happy with the new service, the guide is more complicated and the channel numbers are all different (since they are high def). On the positive side, Netflix is now on the TV and I don't have to change over to my Amazon Fire Stick to watch it. I just ask for it with the voice-activated remote. Isn't technology wonderful? The picture is not our exact box but it is similar.

You mean you haven't divorced cable yet? I only pay for one streaming service at a time, right now I am paying for Amazon and maybe next month I'll pay for Netflix or Hulu. I haven't had cable these last couple decades.

@rebelann He really has trouble remembering how to do new things, the Parkinson's is evil that way and so I want to keep things as status quo as possible.

If it was up to me I would have SLing TV and be done with it but my hubs loves his cable. There is no way I could get rid of cable, it would kill him.

Hi Belle. I myself do not have the patience to connect whatever with those TV or PC set. I leave that to my husband (unless I have no choice at all).

lol This was a no choice situation, my hubs is not at all able to do complicated things these days, He has Parkinson's disease and it has affected his ability to solve problems.

it is very confusing but yes, makes things a bit more simple for the most part. I wish we could do net flix but it runs us over our data limit.

I asked the cable company how much data I get and they said a terabyte so I guess I am okay.

@BelleStarr it's funny because all the women in our family are more knowledgeable about technology in general than the guys. When I have an issue I call my daughter.

Well good for you. I hate having to reconnect my computer to everything when I changed the room around which I did last month. I held off on hooking up my printer because I was using my husband's via WiFi, but now I can't access that any more so I have to find the Cable that goes between my computer and the printer. I think I left it dangling. There are so many cords and they are all black. Maybe I should consider painting them in some way.. hmm lightbulb going off here. Now I have another project once this foot. improves more. Thanks for jump starting my brain.

@MarshaMusselman Well I might not write about what I ate for breakfast but I like reading about people's lives and what they are doing and we can all learn a little from each other and perhaps experiences we haven't had ourselves.

@BelleStarr nail polish was what I came up with too. Just yesterday, I read about two members that don't write about certain things they think are too mundane or uninteresting (those are probably the same thing) or something. But, I think we all could inspire each other. If not for things to write about then at least to help us think.

lol Since Al developed Parkinson's his ability to figure things out has become greatly impaired so I have had to learn how to manage these things. I do miss the old Al but I am feeling a bit more confident after this.

Good for you, I used to be that independent and do things by myself but then I married a computer tech and he did it all. I now an not allowed to touch the technical stuff in the house, I should probably try by myself on times when hes gone because if anything happens to him I will be screwed.

lol Yes well I feel that way on so many levels, my husband can't do the things he used to and I find I am having to learn a whole new set of skills. I think you would be wise to at least become a little familiar with some of the things.

@BelleStarr I started looking at my computer and the cords that go where yesterday just to get more familiar with it. Next I will tackle the tv and that hoard of cords from all the different boxes and such.

I find changing things is an upset, but it has to happen every once in a while. We just found a way to save a few hundred a month and my husbands TV is not working properly but works and mine has not changed. We have our own TV's because he watches so much sports I can't stand it..... Our computers and ipad did not even have a hick up.
