Things You Shouldn’t Say When You Have Just Been Fired

Your boss has just sacked you, for whatever reason. What you say next can affect references or appeals against the decision. Punching the boss is an obvious no-no, but so perhaps are saying any of the following. 1/. So is this a good time to ask for a raise? 2/. Can I still come to the office party on Friday? 3/. Are you still coming round to dinner at weekend then? 4/. Any chance of some blank letters with the company logo on to keep as souvenirs? 5/. So, what time does my shift start on Monday then? Aw...I wish they did not fire so easily. People make mistakes, and those who plan should be the one who should be fired before throwing out people.

@vandana7 yes, often the problem is down to the very managers who do the firing, not the poor schmuck they sack

I think it would be the best just go away, not to yell or swear to boss or other workers.

@mrki444 And yet, you'd be surprised at how often the yelling and swearing happens. *shake my head* Hello. My pc just informed me that I've never spoken to you before. Belated welcome to myLot! I do hope you are enjoying myLot and the members here while you are earning your pennies... (smiling at you)

I know someone who was once sacked from a job for looking at pictures of sheep!

@asfarasiknow wow, that is an odd excuse to sack someone. Strangest I saw was a girl who brought in a mace spray she had bought for self defence. Her boyfriend asked her how it worked so she sprayed him, just a bit to give him a sample right in the middle of a call centre office environment . He ended up on the floor clutching his eyes and screaming in agony. She was fired before his ambulance arrived

@arthurchappell Er, did the couple stay together...? Re the sheep shots: Cleaning job in a big rural house for some not-particularly-pleasant nouveaux riches types. They bred some sort of fancy sheep. There was no paper to read during her coffee break so she flicked through a book of photos of these creatures and they saw this (the employers, not the sheep) and she got fired. She wasn't too upset!

@asfarasiknow I don't know. He was fired soon after, for claiming to be ill, getting sent home and then going in the pub - the very same pub the lady who signed him off sick went in the same afternoon. - they were both dreadful people to work with. He was racist, she would tell tales on everyone there

"So what time does my shift start on Monday then?' - that is the refusal to accept reality syndrome.

@Kandae11 I remember a girl at university turning up for lectures even after she was told she had failed her first year and was off the course. It took about two weeks for her to accept that she couldn't come to the campus any more - very sad.

To be honest I wouldn’t have a clue what to say if I had been sacked. Luckily I have never been sacked and hope never to be sacked.I would be interested in hearing what you think I should say.

@sh2ker depends what you are fired for, apologizing and just accepting the situation is best if you have genuinely done something wrong and hope they still offer you decent references for future employers

@arthurchappell I suppose even if you don’t expect a good reference or don’t thing you have done anything wrong it is best to leave with your dignity.

I've only been fired from 1 job that I worked at for almost a year. I wasn't in the wrong, but I couldn't prove it. I just left. No bad blood. I still go there occasionally to get drinks since it's so close to me.

I had just taken a large-ish mouthful of juice when I read number 4. My laptop is now looking decidedly orange... I think you owe me a new keyboard.
