#1 - Keep things on screen moving and not idle. #2 - Never have a video without sound. If you are not speaking on your video, then you should use music. You can get free music to use in your videos here: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/ #3 - The use of moving text on screen (aka kinetic typography) is very effective to keep people watching. #4 - Having a person on-camera on video is very powerful for engagement, as people connect with people. Eye contact with the camera is especially important. #5 - If you are explaining something then drawing on your screen is very effective for engagement. It doesn't need to look great to keep people watching, but just get the message across. #6 - The use of cut-scenes are important in video. For example, rather than using moving text all the way through, or a screen recording, you can flick between multiple options. #7 - The first 5-10 seconds of your video will see the BIGGEST drop off in audience. After 30 seconds you can literally lose 90% of your audience. Doing the above tips will definitely help stop that from happening, but if you really want to keep them watching then you need to grab their full attention with a pattern interupt. An example could be a picture of a pigeon appearing, with moving text which follows what is being said by a voice-over saying... “I'm going to show you how this Pigeon will knock 20lbs of fat of your waist” #8 - Make references in your video to something which will be revealed later. For example start a story, or make a promise, of what will later be revealed in the video. TV Shows do this all the time by telling you what is coming up in the show, either in the current episode or the next. In the example of the Pigeon above, keep that 'loop' open through the video, and don't bring it back to the pigeon until you are at least substantially through the video and have grabbed their attention. Keeping the loop open is important because people will not want to leave until they have found that part of the story/promise resolved. #9 - Some people respond very well to noise, while other are very visual. In order to have the maximum impact you need to keep things moving on screen, while keeping them engaged with audio (ideally both music and voice). #10 - Online videos have headlines. For example on YouTube every video has a title, and also at the beginning of your video you essentially present a headline/intro to suck your audience in. This frames your video and if the headline (essentially the hook) for your video is not strong it will cause people to lose attention faster. Your headline and initial hook needs to raise anticipation and give people a reason to keep watching.
