My little dog gave us a fright!

As most of us know chocolate is very toxic to dogs and can make them extremely ill. Last night I heard a wail from my granddaughter as my little Jack Russell had got into her school bag and eaten 5 squares of Cadbury's Dairy Milk. She was in floods of tears and so afraid she had poisoned our little dog from leaving it lying around. I rang the emergency vet and gave the weight of my dog and how much she had consumed and to my relief they didn't think she had eaten a dangerous amount as it is the dark chocolate that it is most dangerous to them. I kept an eye on her and this morning she seems fine even though it has been more than 12 hours so I'm hoping the danger time is past. I think it has been a lesson to my granddaughter never to leave chocolate lying around as next time we may not be as lucky.

The trouble is they like the taste of it so if someone leaves it lying around they will eat it.

It is a new information for me. Naturally no one will give the sweet chocolate to dog especially children because they love their candy. I know this thing happened accidentally. Glad to know that everything is alright.

They shouldn't eat any chocolate but dark is the worst. They can have their own chocolate which you can buy in the shops especially for dogs.

Exactly is the "cocoa" that is dangerous, there is not a lot in milk chocolate. I only like dark chocolate, I found a 85% cocoa that I really like.

We don't eat the dark and I'm so glad there was none lying around. My granddaughter will be more careful now as it has taught her a lesson not to leave it where the dogs can get it.

@sprite1950 I only eat dark, I do not care for the other kinds, my husband likes milk chocolate and even white, that technically is not even chocolate as it does not contain cocoa powder.

All chocolate is bad for them but the dark stuff is the worst as it contains more theobromine which is dangerous to dogs.

@minx267 The night before last she was ill again but as far as I know she hadn't eaten anything bad. She was restless and needed to go out at 3 am, then she was sick. She seemed fine in the morning so I gave her her normal food but she threw it up. I starved her for a while and then gave her some chicken and boiled rice and she seems ok now. I was shattered yesterday through lack of sleep.

I think the dog is fine now. I also think that dogs cannot eat chickens bones. It will affect their intestines. I am sure your granddaughter felt the relief now.

Yes you are right. My two got into the bin once and ate all the chicken bones but luckily they were ok. They can splinter inside them.

It seems only in recent years that people have been told this. I can never remember being told this when we were younger. Our dogs always ate chocolate and no harm ever came to them.

@garymarsh6 Maybe, I like milk chocolate and have a very sweet tooth. I should east more of the dark stuff as it is supposed to have health benefits and as I don't really like it I would eat less!

You know I was talking to an old man the other day and he said exactly the same. It would seem that milk chocolate is fairly harmless but the dark chocolate can be dangerous. Looking at the ingredients they hardly put any cocoa in milk chocolate these days. No wonder it has become so tasteless.

@sprite1950 I am a dark chocolate man myself. The stronger the better and the bonus is you do not eat so much as you are sated with just a couple of squares albeit half a pound bar.........No joking!! Just a couple of squares and you don't need or want any more. I guess it is like a fix.

Our dog ate a whole box of girl scout cookies one time, Samoas and ended up with diabetes. She went blind and we had to put her down, I was so sad so we always kept chocolate out of their way after that. Glad your pup was ok

My little dog is 12 and has been blind for 10 of those but it hasn't spoilt her quality of life. She ate a slug which had been contaminated with slug bait and it poisoned her (before I had her). She is lucky to be alive. Some dogs will eat anything and mine is one of them!

I was talking to a man when I walked my dog this morning and he said he thought the chocolate thing has been exaggerated too much by vets as many dogs eat chocolate without any ill effects but I would rather be safe than sorry.

@JudyEv I'm sure one square wouldn't do any harm although the dark chocolate is not good for them.

@sprite1950 My neighbour gave her little dog a square of chocolate each day. The dog would bring the paper in but wouldn't let her have it until he got his chocolate! But that was just a small piece and I guess it didn't have an accumulative effect.

@sprite1950 When I used to take my dog out on walks she wanted to eat stuff she found and had to pull her away. One day we were walking and we finished our walk and were going up the stairs to our home and I tool off her leash and she turned around and went back down the stairs and out the door. She was home two hours later and she threw up a lot of garbage.

It's scary when that happens. A few years ago I had a dog who was very greedy and we didn't know she could jump up on tables and benches. She got hold of an entire box of dark chocolate and ate it all. She went into severe shock, shaking and peed herself. She recovered but we made sure to put all chocolates into high, closed cupboards after that. After that she was putting on weight and we left a camera when we were out to see what she was doing. We had put her dry dog food into a large plastic box with a lid and the footage showed her jumping onto a table and opening the box with her snout. We then had to clamp the box shut but after a few days she even learned how to remove the clamps!

I have one that is a real foodie and another who just eats what she needs. I have to make sure I put any left over food out of the way as the big one would eat any leftovers, I don't want her to be fat. Your dog sounded like a right little minx!

Yes it was an accident. My 11 year old granddaughter had it in her school bag which she had thrown down when she came home from school. She was in pieces when she realised but at least she is careful now.
