How can I improve myself?

Is there any way you can improve yourself for the sake of your job? For example; I found a job that I need to be proactive, self independent and a self starter which unfortunately, I do not have any of these positive elements. I have the totally opposite characteristics. Any advice? I had not been working for the past 10 years, had been staying at home all these while.
