We've seen a few Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands thus far in Play it Again, Sam, but I think that this is the first instance that both the original band and the cover band are both enshrined. We are at #15b, the "cover:" The Pretenders' cover of The Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing." For many of us, our introduction to The Pretenders was their hit single, "Brass in Pocket," from their self-titled 1979 debut album. However, the band's very first single was, from the same album, their cover of "Stop Your Sobbing." (The cover was also the beginning of the relationship between Pretenders leader/vocalist Chrissie Hynde and Kinks leader/vocalist Ray Davies, which resulted in a child.) Oddly, the single was produced by Nick Lowe, who, afterwards, stopped working with the group, stating that "they aren't going anywhere." The single reached #34 in the UK, stalled at #65 on the Billboard Hot 100, but set the tone for that Hall of Fame career. I love Nick Lowe to death, but sorry, buddy, you really dropped the ball on this particular band! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Oh, well, nobody's perfect. Nick blew one. The cover is pretty close to perfect, though.

Good enough that they've played it every time I've seen them!

Sometimes the 'experts' can get it very wrong can't they?
