Cabo San Lucas in the 1970s

In the early 1970s, my husband and I went to Cabo San Lucas for our honeymoon. There was ONE hotel, no condominiums, no outside restaurants or shops. The photo above is one I took of our hotel from our plane as we landed. The only way to access our hotel was to fly in on a small plane and land on a dirt runway. Some people also took their yachts down there and anchored off the coast. John Wayne was one of the famous people who often did this. The hotel was a converted monastery. There was no glass in the windows; only wooden shutters. There was a upside to this isolation, however. There were more people taking care of us than there were guests staying at the hotel. In fact, the hotel probably had fewer than two dozen guests staying while we were there. The waitresses actually were singing in the morning as they set the tables on the patio for breakfast. We were able to take out boats, swim in the pool, go snorkeling or rent tanks to go diving, and relax either on the beach or poolside without any crowds. Waiters popped up everywhere to get us whatever we wanted ... something to drink, lunch, etc. There were no lines. Reservations were not needed in the evening for the candlelight dinner. The menu was upscale, the service was cheerful, and the atmosphere was wonderful. We have not gone back, but I understand that today Cabo San Lucas is crowded, noisy, and busy. There is now a jet port rather than a dirt runway for private planes. We have no desire to go back. We love our memories of Cabo San Lucas, just the way it was. It was a romantic, beautiful honeymoon!

Do not go back if you want to keep your good memories intact. We went back to a small village on the Costa del Sol in Spain, a place where we went in 1971 for our honeymoon. It has changed so much, it is so horrible now that we regretted to have go back there.

@DeborahDiane I wanted to cry when I saw all those high buildings where our small hotel was.

@LadyDuck - I'm sure that is how I would feel, too, if we returned to where our old hotel stood in Cabo. We have such romantic memories of our time there.

@LadyDuck - That is exactly how we feel. From Southern California, there are many inexpensive deals to go to Cabo San Lucas, but we do not want to go back. We know it is nothing like the sweet place we remember!

I hope you can able to come back to this place. I do love coming back to certain places, especially if the are good memories there.

@DeborahDiane I think it is nice to reminisce while seeing what's new in this place.

@Shavkat - I do not think we will ever go back. We like it just the way we remembered it!

That looks idyllic. Probably a good idea to just remember it as it was. Don't you just hate 'progress'?

@DeborahDiane Some people would call us regressive but for me, if change is for the better then fair enough but all to often it seems to be change merely for the sake of it.

@WorDazza - I agree that change is often NOT for the better. I see that in the education of our children. They keep changing the way they do it, and just make things worse for our children.

@WorDazza - Yes, I do dread progress sometimes. I feel the same way about the town of Laguna Beach. Currently, there is just a two-lane road to get to it, so it has remained pretty much the same for decades. If they ever widen the road, I think it could change dramatically for the worse. I hope that never happens, because I love living here.

The days where many of us could enjoy a nice quiet vacation in places like Cabo San Lucas are gone forever.

@Deepizzaguy - I am afraid you are right. There are few elegant, private and peaceful places like that left in the world anymore. I have heard there are spots like it in Africa, but I don't know. I have never gone there.

You had a beautiful honeymoon so why spoil it by going back. Many things through the years are completely changed and it's hurtful to see the changes. I feel the same way about my hometown. I hardly ever go back but it makes me feel sad when I do.

@RubyHawk - I know exactly what you mean. Places change, so I would rather have my good memories than go back and see the places again.

Hi Deborah. I like places that are not too crowded. It is just sad how some beautiful places could be different from the way it used to be. Memorable moments.

@mlgen1037 - Yes, it is hard to find quiet, remote beautiful places anymore. It seems like everyone in the world can go almost anywhere they want!

@mlgen1037 - Yes, it is hard to find unpopulated, pleasant places. I do not like crowds, either, so I avoid parades and big events like that.

@Teep11 - Yes, there are plenty of other places we would rather go in the future, and keep our memories just the way they were.

@sueznewz2 - I agree. The way it looks today would just be like any big, busy resort area. I would rather remember it the way it was.

What wonderful memories you have. Certainly some places do become so big and noisy that there is very little pleasure in visiting them.

@JohnRoberts - That is true. I'm sure that adorable little hotel has been torn down and replaced with a highrise. What a shame it would be to try to go back.
